The Investigation
It's one of the rarest political events in American history, one that only three presidents have ever experienced before today. Just months after the release of Special Counsel Robert Mueller's report, the White House finds itself under fire from a new front: an impeachment inquiry. Who was on that July 25th call between President Trump and President Zelensky? What was promised and who was pressured? And how has that one phone call raised the question, once again, of possible foreign intervention in U.S. elections and "quid pro quo" demands to other foreign leaders? We'll bring you all of our exclusive reporting -- from the halls of Capitol Hill to Maiden Square in Kyiv. Along the way, you'll get insight from legal analysts and historians, politicians and principals -- those who are driving the developments in this rapidly-unfolding story -- all as we count down the days until an impeachment vote and a possible senate trial.

The Jury Is Still Out
As the Senate Impeachment Trial enters its second week, Congressman Mark Meadows, joins "The Investigation." Meadows, who is a member of President Trump's impeachment team, weighs in on the aftershocks following the New York Times report on former National Security advisor John Boltons manuscript: "this is all about a political narrative" and says that calling Hunter Biden to testify "would be a good move." Meadows also addresses his upcoming departure from Congress since announcing he won't seek reelection and possible next steps for him. "The Investigation" co-hosts John Santucci and Katherine Faulders also discuss the exclusive ABC reporting on the audiotape from a 2018 small dinner with Trump released by former Giuliani associate Lev Parnas. "Apples to Clouds"
Over 20 years ago, he was part of an investigation into a sitting president and senior counsel to Ken Starr. Now, Paul Rosenzweig joins "The Investigation" co-hosts Chris Vlasto and Katherine Faulders, and calling the impeachment trial of President Trump a "watershed moment in American history" and summarizing the Senate leaderships strategy as "very simpleto move as fast as they can...avoid as much evidence as possible." But Rosenzweig, who currently serves as resident senior fellow of the National Security and Cyber Security Program at the R Street Institute, cautions against comparing this era to the time of Clinton: "The comparison...is kind of apples to clouds...[in] which every assertion of executive privilege was eventually overcome." Later, ABC News chief White House correspondent and co-host of the "Powerhouse Politics" podcast Jonathan Karl shares his latest reporting on the White House response and his own prediction that the Senate trial will last "two weeks or less," largely due to "impeachment fatigue in the country." "Very Stretched, Very Thin, Very Different"
As the impeachment inquiry prepares to move to a trial in the Senate, former Congressman Bill McCollum sits down with "The Investigation." As one of the House impeachment managers during the Clinton impeachment trial, McCollum shares his view of the impeachment inquiry: "it's that grave a nature that ought to be determined by the voters next year, the election." The former Congressman sees little comparison between impeachment trials, calling the case against President Trump, "Very stretched, very thin, very different." But first, "The Investigation"team along with Senior National Correspondent Tom Llamas give an inside look into ABC's investigation of 2020 candidate Mike Bloomberg and allegations that his company has a culture of sexist commentary and a toxic environment for his female employees that arose in the 80's and 90's. As the impeachment inquiry continues with committee counsels testifying before the House Judiciary Committee, former Republican counsel for the House Oversight Committee during the impeachment of President Clinton, Barbara Comstock, joins "The Investigation." Comstock, a former Congresswoman from Virginia and now an ABC News contributor, reveals what she called "an odd thing for Republicans to be saying" when it comes to the impeachment process and shares her theory as to why she believes the American public is not engaged: "We know how the movie ends, and we know the final chapter wont be until next November." Then, co-hosts Chris Vlasto and John Santucci discuss ABC News Chief Justice Correspondent Pierre Thomas' exclusive interview with FBI Director Wray, as all eyes turn to the FBI with the release of the Department of Justice Inspector Generals report into the origins of the Russia investigation. "You Got Nothing"
As Congress takes critical next steps in the impeachment inquiry, ABC News senior correspondent Terry Moran and contributor John Cohen break down all latest developments on "The Investigation." Cohen, a former senior investigator for the House Judiciary committee, provides his unique analysis of the public testimony thus far: "a sounding of the alarm...that the national security system that has protected this country for decades is broken." As for the White House responses to the inquiry, Moran theorizes that the president's allies will take their case to the American people "that they dont need this committee, it's basically 'you got nothing' to use a line from an old gangster movie." "We Were Horrified"
The co-founders of Fusion GPS, Glenn Simpson and Peter Fritsch, speak out to "The Investigation," breaking their silence about the origins of the now infamous Steele Dossier and weighing in on the current impeachment inquiry involving Ukraine. "We were horrified when it [the Steele Dossier] was published because it's not the kind of thing that we do," Simpson told "The Investigation," of the publication of the raw information, adding that the information that Steele, a former MI6 agent hired by Fusion, brought back to them was "a digital Pearl Harbor...the government of Russia attacked our political system." The two former investigative reporters who were original hired by the Republicans to investigate then candidate Donald Trump leading up to the 2016 election have released a new book entitled "Crime and Progress: Inside the Steele Dossier and the Fusion GPS Investigation of Donald Trump." "Don't Go Chasing Rabbits"
Former Chicago mayor and chief of staff to President Obama Rahm Emanuel joins "The Investigation." Emanuel, now an ABC News contributor, offers that censure in a Senate trial may be best option: "they may hit him with a yellow card...and that would be condemnation and censure." The former White House chief strategist during President Clinton's impeachment trial also makes note of the stark difference between the two presidents responses: "[Trump] is his own war room." And as more witnesses are lined up to testify in public hearings, Emanuel cautions, when asked about the significance of "star witnesses": "Dont go chasing rabbits down rabbit holes...the king of kings here is the President of the United States." "A Very Troublesome Telephone Call"
The impeachment process for a sitting president can be a daunting task. Just ask Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson, formerly a Congressman from Arkansas who served on the House Judiciary Committee during impeachment proceedings against Clinton. Hutchinson, who was one of 13 "prosecutors" referred to as House Managers- during Clinton's impeachment trial in the Senate, sits down for an interview with "The Investigation" co-hosts Chris Vlasto and John Santucci. "It [was] an unwise call," Hutchinson said, referring to that July 25th phone call between President Trump and Ukrainian president Zelenskiy, adding "but that doesn't mean that a president ought to be impeached." As the House gears up for two days of the first public testimony surrounding the impeachment inquiry, Hutchinson reminds: "you cannot impeach a sitting president without the support of the American public...youre not going to gain the confidence of the American public without having public testimony." "We Are Kind of Enemies"
"The Investigation" co-hosts Chris Vlasto and John Santucci interview two recipients of the International Women's Media Foundation "Courage in Journalism" award: Ukrainian journalists Nastya Stanko and Anna Babinets. Stanko, a war reporter who is often on the front lines of conflict in Eastern Ukraine and was once held hostage while on the job, stressed the importance of US military aid because even with peace agreements, "nobody believes Putin" and "if we will have this military aid from US, we will have this protection. And for people in Ukraine, it's also very important that we have this partner." Babinets, an investigative journalist focused on government corruption and big crime in Ukraine, explained their fears and frustration with reporting in their home country: "we almost never get our words in Ukraine because in some point and some understanding, we are kind of enemies of Ukraine." Brad Moss, a lawyer who specializes in whistleblower law, also weighs in on his concerns about protecting the whistleblower's identity in light of President Trump's claims that he deserves the right to confront his accuser. "If the president wants to be able to invoke his sixth amendment rights to confront his accusers, he can have DOJ rescind the memo saying he can't be indicted and we can try this through the criminal process. "By Hook or By Crook"
As the House Judiciary Committee kicks off a series of hearings on the findings laid out in Robert Mueller's Russia report, former Trump aide Roger Stone joins "The Investigation," telling co-hosts Kyra Phillips and Chris Vlasto: "I don't see there being any fervor in the country for impeachment." Stone, who faces a seven count indictment from the Mueller probe and previously testified in front of the Watergate Committee, shares his opinion of former Nixon White House counsel John Dean's testimony on Capitol Hill: "I kind of think he's click-bait." Stone, a veteran GOP strategist, even offers his advice to President Trump as the 2020 race gears up: "He should keep it positive and run on his record." Later, Senior National Correspondent Terry Moran joins the conversation and reveals the one person he says needs to make an appearance before the Judiciary Committee, "by hook or by crook." "He's The Most Powerful Family Member of a President Since Bobby Kennedy"
While President Trump is overseas, a new and exclusive interview granted by his senior adviser and son in law Jared Kushner is making political waves back at home. Axios' national political reporter Jonathan Swan sat down with Kushner, the two discussing the fallout from that 2016 Trump Tower meeting: "We're in a place now where people are playing Monday morning quarterback," questions surrounding the Kushner Companies' business dealings" "At this point I have been fully vetted," and whether or not Kushner discussed his own White House security clearance with his father in law: "I have not discussed it." When asked by "The Investigation" if Swan thinks Kushner faces any vulnerability with the president: "He's not invulnerable and there have been times
where the president has been irritated with [Kushner], mostly when...he attracts negative news coverage," said Swan, "but I mean, hes family." Bonus: "The Report Is My Testimony"
After submitting a 448 page report that summarized the findings from a 674 days long investigation, Special Counsel Robert Mueller finally breaks his silence, reading a prepared statement from the press room in the Justice building. After announcing his resignation to private life, Mueller stated the Special Counsel did not "make a determination as to whether the President did commit a crime," explaining the reasoning behind that decision was due to the "long-standing department policy: a president cannot be charged with a federal crime while he is in office." Added the veteran prosecutor, "charging the president with a crime was therefore not an option we could consider." He added that he and his team of investigators were "guided by principles of fairness" and that "any testimony from this office would not go beyond our report
the report is my testimony." Now, the members of "The Investigation" led by Chris Vlasto break down the Mueller press conference with former Governor of New Jersey and former U.S. Attorney now ABC News contributor Chris Christie. "I think what [Mueller] was doing was being what Bob Mueller is: which is a boy scout," the former Governor tells "The Investigation." As for whether Democrats will pursue impeachment proceedings, Christie says "I would say game on. Bring it on if you want to do it, that's your constitutional right to do." Bonus: "An Odd Alice in Wonderland Kind of Switch"
In a special episode of "The Investigation," the ABC News investigative team breaks down the conclusion of the Mueller investigation. After 2,800 subpoenas, 500 search warrants, over 500 witnesses interviewed, Mueller concluded "the investigation did not establish that members of the Trump campaign conspired or coordinated with the Russian government in its election interference activities" while not officially exonerating the President on obstruction of justice charges. Our reporters speak with former Homeland Security official John Cohen and ABC News Senior Congressional correspondent Mary Bruce for their reporting and analysis. Trump's "Achilles' Heel"
Vicky Ward talks to "The Investigation" about her latest book: "Kushner Inc.: Greed. Ambition. Corruption. The Extraordinary Story of Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump." Ward, an investigative reporter and best-selling author, says she interviewed over 200 sources to create a portrait of Jared and Ivanka's "unprecedented" role in the White House. She argues that while many anticipated they would serve as the Trump administration's moral center, their alleged actions behind the scenes illustrate their disregard for the rules and self-serving motivations. Instead of being a "moderating influence" on the president, Ward says, "these two are his great weakness." Later, the ABC team analyzes the ongoing investigations, how they could affect Jared and Ivanka, and the couple's overall impact since their arrival in Washington. "We are headed to impeachment...We're not ready"
"The Investigation" talks to David Bossie, Donald Trump's former deputy campaign manager, and Keith Davidson, the former attorney for adult-film star Stormy Daniels and Playboy Playmate Karen McDougal--two women who received hush money payments after allegedly having affairs with Trump. A former chief investigator during the Clinton administration, Bossie says the current White House is not prepared to handle the onslaught of investigations or what he sees as the eventual outcome: "We are headed to impeachment." Davidson, who negotiated with Michael Cohen to secure payment for his clients, talks about why Trump's former fixer turned against him. He also identifies what he says was the pivotal moment during the campaign that triggered Trump to pay off Stormy Daniels. Davidson also goes on the record about his dealings with AMI, the parent company of the National Enquirer, and the "incredible meeting" he had with AMI's CEO David Pecker and Karen McDougal, whose story was later sold in a "catch and kill" technique to AMI right before the 2016 election. Bonus: "The Committee Will Come To Order"
In a special episode from "The Investigation," the ABC News investigative team breaks down the day's events on Capitol Hill. As President Trump is overseas meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jung Un, his former lawyer and fixer Michael Cohen appeared before the House Oversight Committee, addressing everything from Trump Tower Moscow to hush money payments to President Trump's SAT scores. "When the Cell Door Clanks"
In a wide-ranging interview with "The Investigation," Clinton insider John Podesta reveals his thoughts on Roger Stone: "when the cell door clanks, he'll feel a bit more remorse," sitting down with the Special Counsel: "I couldn't tell which way they were going," and being victim to the 2016 email hack orchestrated by Russia: "We forget sometimes that those hacks were themselves crimes."
