Today's Maverick is a biz friend of mine who has come out of the woodworks to change the face of sexual abuse story telling. Actor, writer, mentor and sexual abuse survivor, Perry Power does everything he can to make a positive change in the world through storytelling.   Ranking up 2.3M likes and 125k followers on TikTok, his message of helping Sexual abuse survivors break their silence speaks to the hearts of many people all over the world. Perry co-runs a charity called We Rescue Kids, where they rescue kids from sexual abuse and give them the support they need to heal and positively move forward.   Perry's latest book, Breaking The Silence, reached the #1 spot on Amazon for Sexual Abuse and Mental Health. Today's Maverick is the incredible Blake Leeper.  Patrick "Blake" Leeper, eight-time Paralympic Track and Field international medalist, world record holder and three-time American record holder started his medal run in 2011 at the Parapan American Games where he took his first silver in the 100-meter dash. He went on to compete in the 2012 Paralympic Games in London, where he picked up two more medals, a bronze in the 200-meter dash and silver in the 400-meter dash, losing to South African Oscar Pistorius, whose world record of 45.39 seconds is Leeper is chasing. In 2013, Leeper also took four medals at the Paralympic World Championships in Lyon, France, where he ran as part of the world record-setting 4x100-meter relay gold medal team. At the same event he took the silver medal in the 100-meter dash, 200-meter dash and 400-meter dash. Leeper's medal collection includes one gold, six silver and one bronze. Over his career, he hopes to win more medals than any Paralympic athlete in track and field. He is also striving to be the first American track and field Paralympian who qualifies for the able bodied Olympic trials. In addition to the medals he has already won, Leeper holds one 2013 Paralympic world record in the 4x100m relay and three American records in the 100-meter dash (10.91). On June 21st the day after a one-year suspension for the use of a non-performance drug discovered after participating in an event on June 20th 2015. Leeper broke his own American record in the 200-meter dash (21.49) and smashed the 400-meter dash record with a time of (46.54). Leeper's world record for his part in the 4x100-meter relay still stands today. The 26-year-old Leeper, who was born without legs from a congenital birth defect, did not start racing until 2010. It was at his first ever race in Edmond, Oklahoma that he caught the attention of the Associate Director of High Performance for U.S. Paralympics Track and Field, who convinced his parents to let their son move into the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, California, where he started his habit of winning. Drew Goodall is the owner of a shoe-shining company called Sunshine Shoeshine. Drew’s way to do business is different and admirable in many ways. He hires only homeless and disadvantaged people to his business, giving them a new chance to be part of the society and a feeling of cohesiveness. He also gives a proportion of the company’s annual turnover to charity. Drew’s journey to entrepreneurship was not very usual either. As a former actor he ended up living on the streets of London after his career fell apart. It took some time and a lot of effort to make the company stable but the hard work paid off. Today you will meet Holly Madge. Maverick Creative Magical Being, if you ask me. Holly set up her first drum set at age 10 in a barn in Devon and it's where the love affair began. With the help of supportive parents, extraordinary teachers, deaf neighbors and a habit of saying yes to every new challenge, she picked up her first class honors degree in music at Southampton University and headed to London where she cut her teeth at the forefront of the popular music scene.  Holly is not your average professional drummer. She is just as at home deep in a sweaty progressive house set in Ibiza performing with Idris Elba as she is delivering the iconic percussion lines of Hans Zimmer’s film scores in the world’s arenas. Variety keeps Holly’s inquisitive mind fresh and her style eclectic, from creating a duet with a contortionist at the Singapore Grand Prix to performing live drum and bass at Glastonbury with The Telegraph’s top ten festival highlights The Correspondents or performing with two contemporary dancers for Nike’s new product range. Akbar and I spoke about: How to educate with love and create relationships to move forward in life What change is possible even for kids who have never even known safety and security through vision and action Labels mean nothing- the sky is the limit when you have the right support Principal at West Side High School in Newark, NJ, Akbar Cook has worked to increase attendance and end violence within his community. He realized that students were missing school roughly 3 times a week because they were being made fun of for not having clean clothes. In response, he transformed the school’s locker room into a laundromat for students to clean their clothes for free, and attendance has increased. Additionally, due to violence in their community and the desire to keep his students or his “babies” as he likes to call them out of trouble, Akbar Cook created an after-school program that works to keep students off the street, encourage studying, and overall gives them a place free of violence.
