OMAR GOODING - Eggcellent Noodles

On this week's episode of Eating While Broke, Coline welcomes silver screen veteran, Omar Gooding. Known for his comedic roles in shows like Smart Guy, Wild & Crazy Kids, and films like Baby Boy, Omar sits down to share his journey from child star to Hollywood veteran who's still hustling. Having entered the business at 9 years old alongside his older brother Cuba Gooding Jr., Omar takes us through some of the behind-the-scenes stories of the ups and downs of coming up in the industry. From losing his virginity at 13 to a grown woman on set, to going to jail at 18 for a gun charge that almost derailed his career, Omar gives us a glimpse into the real temptations and demons child stars face. He credits his momager and faith for keeping him anchored amidst turbulent teen years. We also get the backstory on the notorious "Montgomery Brawl" video that recently went viral and how it has sparked inspiration for Omar's newest pivot - a budding career in stand-up comedy and even a 16-city comedy tour. Of course, no Eating While Broke episode is complete without a struggle meal tasting. Omar teaches Coline his bachelor-days recipe for elevating ramen by cracking a raw egg directly into a Styrofoam cup o' noodles straight from the microwave. Though skeptical at first, Coline tries the protein-injected combo while Omar explains this was a staple source of sustenance during his early grinding days. While not quite convinced on the flavor profile, Coline enjoys peeling back Omar's layers to reveal his authentic Hollywood tales - from sleeping in cars as a kid to now juggling passion projects while raising his young sons. His candid reflections on best practices for longevity in the fickle entertainment industry make this a must-listen episode for both aspiring and seasoned creatives alike.   Connect: @wittcoline  @omargooding Share your recipes with us: @EATINGWHILEBROKE   See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

CP - Shrimpin' Ain't Easy Over Ramen

On this week's episode of Eating While Broke, Coline welcomes comedian CP, who takes her and listeners by surprise when he unveils impressive cooking skills passed down from his chef parents. Behind the successful puppeteer, producer, and touring comic is a sixth grade master chef whipping up butter, garlic, and sriracha shrimp over ramen noodles. But CP's journey to stardom hasn't been all standing ovations and viral videos - he's endured painful flops and lessons along the way. Detroit born and bred, CP dreamed of following in the footsteps of edgy comics like Eddie Murphy. However, he was crushed when he didn't win class clown his senior year of high school. After briefly losing himself partying in college, CP got focused, graduated with honors, and started grinding on the Detroit comedy circuit. He reminisces on getting robbed at gunpoint in high school but ultimately feeling empowered to buy his own clothes and build independence. CP keeps it real with Coline about the high highs and low lows of chasing Hollywood fame, from bombing on stage to selling TV shows and splurging on acting checks. Through all his ventures, he's learned to follow his creative spirit. When industry doors closed during the pandemic, CP turned his home into a makeshift studio and pumped out content. As CP reflects on money management with Coline, one thing is clear – he hustles hard and tries to lift others along the way. Between the modest wisdom and lavish tales, CP delivers an uplifting message to Coline and listeners - stay ready so you don't have to get ready. Keep practicing, embrace the detours, and your gifts will make room for you. His story teaches that we should have faith that God's plan will connect the dots. JON KINNARD - Garnachas

This week on Eating While Broke, our guest entrepreneur Jon Kinnard has an incredible story of hustling to build his coffee business Coffee Del Mundo. We go all the way back to his upbringing in Tennessee where he experienced racism that lit a fire in him to want to make change someday, especially in education policy. Jon is all about being strategic and seeking knowledge, which led him to find corporate management training programs early in his career to gain skills, even though he knew he eventually wanted to work for himself. His love of travel brought him to El Salvador where he was inspired to help coffee farmers and learned firsthand the unfair practices of the industry. This experience motivated him to start his own coffee company that could showcase the stories of farmers and cultures behind the beans. What's amazing is the creative ways Jon bootstrapped his business on a tiny budget, like exchanging helping a company sell equipment for the chance to learn from them. Jon's hustle is real! When COVID hit and funds were beyond tight, he actually lived out of an RV in the back of his coffee shop. His passion for bringing healthy drinks to his community kept him going. I love how Jon focuses on honoring the origins of coffee and aims to shift the narrative to be more authentic. He believes coffee culture in the U.S. has been wrongly colonized by Europe. Even the names of drinks and equipment used are Italian, which ignores the real roots of coffee. Coffee Del Mundo has an intentionally curated menu designed with people of color in mind. Jon's mission runs deep. Make sure to tune into this whole conversation to hear more of his incredible journey firsthand!   Connect: @wittcoline  @hustletocreate Share your recipes with us: @EATINGWHILEBROKE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
