Football's Greatest Eras with Paul Scholes and Nicky Butt
Football's Greatest Eras is a new podcast with Manchester United legends Nicky Butt and Paul Scholes. The pair – two Manchester lads – were part of one of the most successful teams ever seen in English football, working under arguably the greatest manager of all time, Sir Alex Ferguson. Produced by Folding Pocket and BBC Studios.
Episodes
Next Generation | "We'd never seen anyone like Cristiano Ronaldo"
In the final episode of the series, Nicky Butt and Paul Scholes look at some of the key players in the later years of the Fergie era.
They remember the first time they came up against Cristiano Ronaldo and why he used to frustrate his team-mates, how Scholesey helped persuade Wayne Rooney to sign and why it all kicked off between Patrice Evra and some of the ground staff at Chelsea.
As well as players who became legends, they look at one or two who didn't live up to expectations, why it never worked out for them and how harshly players could be judged from day one at United.
They also discuss the current squad and ask who are the leaders and whether there's too much pressure on the likes of Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo. Nicky and Paul recall the final years of their careers: why did Newcastle go down when Nicky was there? What convinced Scholesey to retire for good? And what do they miss most about football?

Leaders | "Forget the manager, I’m getting it off Roy! "
Nicky Butt and Paul Scholes are back and this week they’re discussing captains: Keane, Robson, Bruce, Cantona, Adams and Shearer are some of the names that come up in the chat: Who was the best skipper they played under? What did they make of David Beckham being named England captain? And who used to say “Bring your jeans” before a team-bonding session?
Along the way, they discuss what makes a great leader, how some players crumbled under rollickings from the skipper and how the presence of certain players would beat the opposition in the tunnel at Old Trafford.

European Nights | "When he got the ball, Zidane was a genius"
This week's episode focusses on European nights: the teams, the players, the fights and the freezing cold nights away from home.
The lads discuss why they loved playing in Europe and reflect on some of the players they lined up against including Zidane, Messi, Del Piero, Seedorf and R9: What was it like to have Messi running directly at you? Which midfielder would snarl, 'Don't touch me'? And which were their favourite places to play?
They recall the infamous away match at Galatasaray, the trip to Russia that left one United player covered in bites from bed bugs and remember the disappointments against Barcelona, Borussia Dortmund and Jose Mourinho's Porto.
There's also take a detour as they discuss the trip to Brazil in 2000 and how two players went on an unsanctioned hang-gliding trip over Rio. The gaffer was not pleased...

95-96: Our First Title | "That's it, we're dead. Everyone's gonna hate us."
This week Nicky and Paul are taking you back to 1995-96: the season of Cantona's return, grey kits, Keegan's rant and, of course, "You'll never win anything with kids".
Nicky and Paul recall their reactions when they heard Hughes, Ince and Kanchelskis had been sold and how they felt after getting well beaten at Aston Villa on the opening day. They discuss Eric Cantona's comeback against Liverpool and how he got different treatment from Sir Alex, how they whittled down Newcastle's 12-point lead and they remember the manager's furious reaction at Southampton and why he ordered them to change their shirts at half-time.
Elsewhere, Nicky reveals how a bet with Kevin Keegan at Newcastle ended with a load of 2ps on the manager's desk, he and Paul discuss how they felt battling one another for a place in the team during their United careers and who was singing their own song on the way back from Middlesbrough after the league was won?

The Class of 92 | “If you got the balls wrong they’d annihilate you”
Paul and Nicky take us back to their early days as young kids trying to make it at Manchester United.
They discuss whether they like the ‘Class of 92’ tag, how hard it was to make it as a young pro and what they thought of their team-mates: which player is like Benjamin Button? Who was discovered by the dad of a famous actor? And who did they consider to be the best player among them?
Nicky reveals how he almost signed for another club and how an alternative career came to an abrupt end, they recall the tough love they received from youth coach Eric Harrison and the initiations they had to do in front of the first team.

Battles. Clashes. Red cards. Respect.
This week Nicky and Paul are talking about rivalries. Along the way, they discuss whether they got on with their club rivals when on England duty, recall how Nicky had to protect Gary Neville from an angry Feyenoord front man, Paul reveals just how big a secret his return from retirement against Manchester City was and they discuss whether they would ever have joined a rival.

Fergie Time | “If you let them beat you with those white suits on, don't come back.”
It’s episode two of Football’s Greatest Eras with Nicky Butt and Paul Scholes and this week they’re talking about the man who had a transformative effect on their lives - Sir Alex Ferguson.
Nicky and Paul tell us what it was like to be managed, motivated, developed and - yes - rollicked by the great man. They also bring up a ton of memories such as:
Which of them was once surprised to find Fergie waiting for them in the headmaster’s office when they were late for school?
Who thought he was being sold after rowing with the manager after a game?
Which player did Sir Alex watch constantly at a dinner before later signing him for United?
They chat about what set Sir Alex apart as a manager, recall some of his most inspirational team talks, remember how shocked Cristiano Ronaldo and other foreign players were by the hairdryer, and discuss the desire to keep on winning that saw him move on club legends like David Beckham, Paul Ince, Jaap Stam and Roy Keane.

The '99 Champions League Final
Nicky Butt and Paul Scholes are here to take you inside one of the most dominant periods of English football. You can expect stories about the trophies, the rivalries, the hairdryer and their team-mates throughout the series as they get candid about their time at Manchester United.
Welcome to Football's Greatest Eras and where else to start but with the crowning glory for that team - the 1999 Champions League Final win over Bayern Munich.
Nicky and Paul take us from their flight out to Barcelona on Concorde to the celebrations in Manchester after. They discuss their contrasting emotions as Paul was suspended from the biggest game of his career and what they thought of Sir Alex Ferguson's starting eleven. We go down into the bowels of the Nou Camp as Nicky explains how he felt stood in the tunnel, separated from the Bayern players by a cage. Then, we're into the match itself, from the terrible start of losing a goal early - and who got the blame for that - to the manager's half-time team talk and, finally, to the unforgettable ending.
Along the way, they also recall when Mick Hucknall trained with them (and whether he could play), why Nicky thought he might be on his way out of the club that summer, and which United player was the first to leave the party after the final?

England to make Swiss roll over, Ronaldo drama and Erling Haaland at Rochdale
How come Merse is so confident England will beat the Swiss and win the Euros? Why should Gareth Southgate have no excuses for the quarter-final? And who needs to have a word with Jude Bellingham?
Merse and Jeff discuss all of that plus whether the Euros have harmed Southgate's chances of landing a job with a top club, the enduring drama that is Cristiano Ronaldo, why France are dull to watch, their top 5 players of the tournament so far and whether Erling Haaland would score 60 goals in the National League.

England's Subbuteo football, the surfer boy and liver in engine oil
Questions, questions, and more questions for England and Gareth Southgate after the rotten draw with Denmark. Jeff and Merse try to find some of the answers: was it as bad as the Iceland game? Was Grealish left out so Gareth could avoid confrontation? And why was it like Subbuteo?
They also discuss Scotland's draw with the Swiss, which Euros manager is like a surfer boy and how you reset a broken nose. Jeff also reveals his top 5 moments from his trip to Germany and which food left him feeling the 'wurst'.

Football's Greatest: Phil Thompson | "I admire Gary Neville, believe it or not”
What makes a great leader in football? Thats’s the question Jeff is asking former Liverpool captain Phil Thompson on this week’s episode of the pod. Thommo was himself a born leader, who lifted the European Cup as captain in 1981.
He talks about how Bill Shankly mapped out his entire career and the time Bob Paisley gave him his biggest rollicking, the best leaders he played with and why captaincy seems to matter more in the UK. He also reveals the player that scared him the most, how he pranked an England legend into believing he was joining Liverpool, and what he really thought about Alex Ferguson’s great Manchester United sides.
Phil also talks about some of his lowest moments, including losing the captaincy at Liverpool to Graeme Souness and being overlooked to be England skipper at the 1982 World Cup, and recalls why Steve Gerrard took the armband from Sami Hyypia at Anfield and his emotional team talk before his first match as Liverpool’s caretaker manager.

Football’s Greatest: Gordon Strachan - "Fergie’s petrol was anger"
This week’s guest joining Jeff Stelling is the former Coventry, Celtic and Scotland manager Gordon Strachan. They look back on his career as a player with Aberdeen, Manchester United and Leeds United and he gives us plenty of stories about managerial legends like Sir Alex Ferguson, Jock Stein, Howard Wilkinson and Ron Atkinson, answering questions like:
How did Fergie scare the Aberdeen players into winning? How could Jock Stein be brutal with his own players? Did Big Ron really have a sunbed at the training ground?
Gordon also recalls when Fergie banned the players wives from the team bus after a Scottish Cup Final win, the time he and a team-mate dared to ask the great man for a transfer and why winning promotion with Leeds was so special.
He also explains why managing Celtic or Rangers is the biggest test you can face as a manager, how he dealt with difficult characters in his Scotland squads, facing the brilliant Brazil team at the 1982 World Cup and the trip to Tenerife where he ended up in a lookalike competition…as himself.

These are some of the questions Jeff puts to former Middlesbrough, Fulham and Australia keeper Mark Schwarzer on this week’s pod.
They also discuss how he was left fuming with Mark Hughes and Fulham when a potential move to Arsenal collapsed in 2010, why he’s backing his Aussie compatriot Ange Postecoglu to be a success at Tottenham and he reveals why modern keepers have one eye on the cameras when making saves now.
Plus he explains why he thinks last summer was the right time for David de Gea to leave Manchester United, which Liverpool keeper threw the ball like a javelin and why the Champions League theme music still gives him goosebumps.

Football's Greatest: Phil Thompson's Top 5 Liverpool Players
Kenny Dalglish or Steven Gerrard? Mo Salah or John Barnes? Ian Rush or Bobby Firmino?
These are some of the decisions for Liverpool legend Phil Thompson as he chooses his top 5 players in the club’s history on the latest Football’s Greatest with Jeff Stelling.
Who would regularly lose their temper in the dressing room if Liverpool failed to win in the Premier League? Why does Thommo think it’s wrong for Liverpool fans to boo Michael Owen? Who was his favourite out of the modern day front trio of Salah, Firmino and Sadio Mane?
Thommo faces some tough choices as he picks from a cast that has won league titles and Champions Leagues aplenty, and been part of some the greatest matches in the club’s history. Some great players are mentioned, but who makes the final five?

Football's Greatest Set Piece Takers with Matthew Le Tissier
This week Jeff is in the presence of the man known as ‘Le God’ - Matthew Le Tissier - as they discuss the best set pieces takers ever on Football’s Greatest.
Who won a free-kick competition between Le Tiss, Glenn Hoddle and David Beckham? Which current Premier League star does he claim bends it better than Becks? And who else has impressed him: De Bruyne or Bruno Fernandes? Trent Alexander-Arnold or Cristiano Ronaldo?
Matt reveals his favourite free-kick, which moment from an England match is his greatest regret, why he was so good at penalties and why he’s surprised Gareth Southgate never took up his offer to help the England squad improve their spot-kicks.
He also answers why he continues to court controversy with his views on social media and how he felt to miss the 1998 World Cup after being left out by Hoddle.

Paul Merson's Top 5 Premier League Foreign Imports
If you had to pick your Top 5 Premier League foreign imports, who would make your list? That’s the question Jeff Stelling asks former Arsenal, Middlesbrough, Aston Villa and Portsmouth favourite Paul Merson in this week’s episode of Football's Greatest.
Which Champions League winner did Merse originally think was a waste of money? Who was so good that they looked like an adult playing against children? And which legend on his list is he grateful to for getting him off the front pages of the newspapers?
Bergkamp, Ronaldo, Salah and De Bruyne are just some of the names that crop up, but do they make the final five?

Football's Greatest Mavericks with Paul Merson
Jeff Stelling is joined by his good pal Paul Merson to chat about football's greatest mavericks. Merse will know a thing or two about that having been a mercurial talent himself for Arsenal, Middlesbrough, Aston Villa, Portsmouth and England.
Which of these legends did he think was better in their prime: Ian Wright or Alan Shearer? Which Arsenal legend would go looking for the opposition in the players' lounge after Premier League matches? Who would nobody go near in England training because they were just too good?
They also discuss Harry Redknapp's unusual tactics to get Merse to join Portsmouth, why a night out caused him to receive the biggest rollicking of his career and whether a player from the Championship will make an England World Cup squad ever again like he did in 1998.

He also talks about why the senior England squad is on another level, how members of his local cricket club protected him when he broke into the Leeds team at 16 and which of his team-mates used to trick him into making a cuppa.
