The Way They Were
The podcast where every celebrity split is the one that got away. Each week comedians Grainne Maguire and Chantal Feduchin-Pate take a deep dive into a celebrity breakup, chosen by a special guest, that still lingers in their hearts and minds. We scour interviews, over-analyse iconic pictures and search for meaning in post-breakup media statements. Celeb gossip hounds will feel right at home, but really anyone who's experienced a breakup can appreciate hearing how the rich and famous take heartbreak to a whole new level. They might uncouple ‘amicably with love and respect for one another’ - but we never get over these lost loves! Join us every Friday for a new episode.
Episodes
4 The Way They Are: JFK Jnr & Carolyn Bessette
In our next instalment of our mini-series, The Way They Are,
Chantal and Grainne explore the tempestuous - and ultimately tragic - love
story of JFK Junior and Carolyn Bessette, which was as overtly passionate,
as it was stylish. As we know the lives of this beautiful young couple
were cut way too short, so our hosts imagine what this romance could have been
if it was allowed to run its full course.

3 The Way They ARE: Meryl Streep & Martin Short
Chantal is back in the chair for this episode of The Way They ARE - and what JOY she is spreading, as she presents to us the elusive, but very much celebrated and newish love that appears to have formed between two of showbiz's most loved stars ... Meryl Streep and Martin Short! Grainne nearly jumped out of her seat when the realisation hit that we would be revelling in this most well deserved happy endings, the likes of which most movies could only dream of!

2 The Way They ARE: Abraham & Mary Todd Lincoln
In the second outing of the little cousin of The Way They Were - aka, The Way They ARE - it's Grainne's turn to present us with a couple, who despite all odds, managed to keep their wedding vows.
And in this case 'till death do us part' was probably the promise that saved them from the scandal of the divorce courts.
And in Abraham Lincoln and Mary Todd's day, it was probably easier to suck it up and hope they didn't have to stay wed in the afterlife!

104: Chesney Hawkes, LIVE! Sam Malone & Diane Chambers
Well, it HAPPENED! As promised, Grainne and Chantal did what most of us can only dream of and enticed 'The One and Only' Mr Chesney Hawkes into a room so he could tell us which couple he hasn't gotten over breaking up; and what a wild ride the escapades of Sam Malone and Diane Chambers' romance was.... almost worthy of a storyline from a 1980s sitcom*.
Not only will you hear Chesney talk about his own romantic endeavours, but you'll also get to listen to some of the most dramatic - and electric - reenactments we've ever had on the show.
Thank you to everyone who made it down to see this, no doubt you're still reliving the incredible performances Chesney did of his new track 'Get A Hold of Yourself' and THAT song from the 1990s, but for those of you who couldn't join us, this episode is a gift for you to enjoy...*CHEERS!
Keep watching The Way You Were feed, as although this season is drawing to a close, Grainne and Chantal have some VERY exciting special episodes dropping every Friday from next week - 01/11/24.

For a while they got each other babe, but ultimately, they had to deal with life after love when things fell apart.

101: Heidi Regan: Ryan Gosling & Rachel McAdams
It's finally arrived! Comedian Heidi Regan has given us all permission to wallow in the lost love of Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams and once again lament the fact that no one but Rachel will be kissed they way Ryan kissed her at the VMAs... but unless it's Ryan doin the kissing, what's the point?
Theirs was a love straight out of a Hollywood film, going from hate to love - and in any good romcom, the director would have yelled 'cut' straight after that VMAs kiss and let them walk off into the sunset, but alas, they were in charge of their own destinies and theirs wasn't the fairytale ending of our dreams. So, what ultimately went wrong? Well Grainne and Chantal have all the answers...

100: Luke Meredith: ABBA's Bjorn & Agnetha
This week's episode of TWTW is a 'voyage' into the swinging world of knitted sequin hats, platform silver boots and Eurovision.Yes, cabaret star Luke Merideth, really does a great job in knowing me, knowing you, and decided it was high time we took a deep dive into the torrid love story behind the stars of ABBA!
But, as we didn't have three hours to record, this time we focus on what went on between the one half which contained Agnetha and Bjorn. Did the winner take it all when this romance ultimately failed, or were our erstwhile couple glad that the other took a chance on love?
As always Grainne and Chantal are ready to divulge the details and lay all the love on us, so here we go...

Christmas has come early for Chantal, as we take a deep dive into the very couple she wanted more than ANYTHING to explore, and thanks to her her apparent soul mate, comedian and podcaster Zack Signore, she's able to rip the wrapping off the whirlwind 'romance' that was Angelina Jolie and Billy Bob Thornton's more than vile (geddit?) union.
Even ardent team Jen's listening to this will be running over to the dark side to embrace this match made in the underworld - the campaign for them to rekindle this epic love story starts now!

98: James Barr: Gemma Collins & James Argent
Today's offering of The Way They Were will have anyone with even a passing interest in the escapades of The G.C and Arg absolutely delighted, because thanks to comedian and podcaster, James Barr, that's the only way we're going with this ep! Yes, the Burton and Taylor of reality TV started their wild romance in the year of 2012, the Mayans were right to end their calendar then, as the next 10 years was truly the age of Essex. As always, Grainne has spent days in the archives in order to dig out the real story of this off and on again saga, allowing us to feel like we were at their first kiss thanks to dramatisations by Chantal and James.
AND, James comes up with possibly the best love match for patron saint Cher we've had yet..

97: Benedict Townsend: Lisa Simpson & Nelson Muntz
In today's episode, we see that young love can be just as heartbreaking and nuanced as any adult relationship - especially if the people concerned have stayed at the age of eight for 35years... which is exactly the state of play for Lisa Simpson and her bad boy love interest Nelson Muntz.
Yes, that right, we're going all the way back to the golden year of 1996, when our saxophone playing precocious genius, Lisa had her head turned by the local tearaway, Nelson, and for that we have writer, comedian and internet sensation, Benedict Townsend to thank! Haaahaa!
According to the 'The Simpsons' Lisa and Nelson were never meant to be, but what happens to our star-crossed lovers beyond Springfield? Is there more than meets the eye to this story? Perhaps so, and there are dramatisations aplenty in this ep to illustrate what really happened in this sweet tale of first crushes...

STOP ALL THE CLOCKS... CUT OFF THE PHONE... STOP THE DOG FROM BARKING WITH A JUICY BONE... The day has finally arrived when the bell has tolled on Bennifer 2:0.
As you can imagine, the WhatsApp group sprang into action to bring you the SECOND emergency episode this week, as Grainne and Chantal invite Viv Groskop back on the show to once again pick over the carcass of this failed A-Lister love. Are JLo and Bennifer Affleck the Burton and Taylor of our times? The jury's out on that one, but have a listen to this episode for some comfort that everything happens for a reason.

It's also worth exploring events that occurred in the aftermath of this twisty and turny saga, as there's also a VERY recent update to proceedings!

To mark the end of this epic season of The Way They Were, Grainne and Chantal once again took to the stage to entertain the masses and bring a long lost love story back to life, helping them with this task is comedian and all round good egg, Rachel Paris!
But 'who is the couple that will see out the current series?' I hear you all scream... perhaps an icon of pop and their Hollywood A-lister lover? Maybe someone from the royal dynasty... or does it involve someone who was *in* Dynasty?.... no no, keep reaching for the stars, as we take a walk down the cobbles and pop in the Rover's Return for a natter about the actual soap opera that was the love story of Ken Barlow and Deirdre Rasheed - by eck it's a good un'.

This week, the team welcomes a guest from across the pond, as writer, comedian and podcaster Chelsea Devantez ignores the time difference to bring us a couple who are the epitome of late 80s glamour and glitz - plus a firm favourite of Chantal's - it's Burt Reynolds and Loni Anderson!
On paper this couple had everything, but behind the scenes it was a different story with some rather dark moments to boot.
But what would a night out with this pair be like and was that famous moustache a third wheel in this doomed love story?

This week's episode is a fever dream for everyone involved, as not only is one-half of this week's couple an actual friend of the show and past guest, but it's perhaps one of the most notorious celebrity romances to have emerged from reality TV.
Yes, it's true to say that this week's guest, writer Emer McLysaght played an absolute blinder when she brought the very public saga of Samuel Preston and Chantelle Houghton to the table for us to gorge on. And it would appear the show has now eaten itself, as Grainne was able to use the very episode Samuel appeared on as part of her investigation as to what on earth could have possibly gone wrong with this couple, who met surrounded by TV cameras on Big Brother, while one half of them was in a relationship... madness it didn't work out.

Although it's very common to see May to December romances in Tinsel Town, today's showbiz couple raised eyebrows in the gossip pages, when an older woman dared to court a man below her age bracket - but the world was a different place when Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher were stepping out, and now women have no prejudice against them for age, or looks and equal pay, so PHEW!
The guest we have to thank for this EPIC tale of toxicity is the fantastic comedian, Olga Koch. As you can imagine, Grainne's deep dive unearths some jaw-dropping details and Chantel was cock-a-hoop at being able to get her teeth into it all.
But which party can be declared winner in this celebrity bun fight? Have a listen to find out...

In today's episode, we say 'Hello Dolly' to 'Funny Girl' Sooz Kempner, who brings us epic proportions of Hollywood heartbreak, courtesy of a couple who probably STILL lament, 'The Way We Were' even after several decades apart.
Grainne and Chantal would cross 11,12 or even 13 Oceans to find out what a night was like on the town with Barbra Streisand and Elliott Gould, no doubt it would be a bit of a 'Mash', but everyone would stay the best of 'Friends'.... Oh, and one of our star-crossed lovers bought the bother a pig for an opening night gift, so there's that too.

This episode tells the tale of when Chantal and Grainne took to the stage at the iconic London Venue, The Museum of Comedy with a double bill of brilliant shows.
Up first, is the hilarious comedian Alexandra Haddow who was bursting at the seams to unleash the early noughties emo hell that was Pete Doherty and Kate Moss on us all!
You'll be pulling on those skinny jeans, getting a ticket to next year's Glasto with your Hunter wellies and running around Primrose Hill even before you get to the part where Alexandra tells us who she thinks Cher should be with.
It's more fun than you can buy in a baggy, that's for sure... and a lot cheaper.

75: Miranda Sawyer: Will Smith & Jada Pinkett Smith
Now, this is a story all about how Grainne and Chantal got flipped-turned upside down by this week's guest Miranda Sawyer, so take a minute and sit right there to learn how Will and Jada became Prince and Princess of Bel-Air, before seemingly abdicating by way of their stranger than soap opera style relationship...
It's all here, the weird toxic positivity, the unwanted 40th birthday documentary, the 'open' marriage and of course, THAT slap.
So, take this podcast's name out of your goddamn mouth and tell your friends we're here, it's A Different World!

74: Sikisa: Britney Spears & Justin Timberlake
Oops they did it again, yes Grainne and Chantal have another incredible guest on the show, who really brings the A-game of celebrity couples for us to pick our way through, so let's let comedian Sikisa, 'hit us baby one more time', as we cry a river over the lost iconic love of Britany Spears and Justin Timberlake!
This episode transports us back to a world where the prince and princess of pop's love burned brightly for the world to see, and when Sikisa was no doubt choreographing her own moves to their tunes.
But, what would a night out on the town with these guys be like and according to Sisika should our Patron Saint, Cher be dating?
All this and more is ready and waiting for your ears... enjoy!

73: Steve Bugeja: Zack Morris & Kelly Kapowski
Today's episode is a wonderful flight of fancy in which we delve into what we all thought was the teenage dream, but looking back was in fact a toxic hellscape of a relationship, and it's all thanks to brilliant guest, Steve Bugeja!
Chantal was 'Saved By The Bell' when guessing who this week's couple was, as Grainne's clues 'Screeched' everything about who they were... and no doubt, you know too that this week, it's TV's teen IT couple, Zack Morris and Kelly Kapowski from 'Saved By The Bell'.
Don't let the fact that this couple is fictional make you believe that it's any less dramatic, and this story certainly manages to stir some real life emotions in everyone involved in the episode. Time to hang by the school lockers in the hall to talk about who you're taking to prom and remember the name 'Lark Voorhies'!

72: Mary O'Connell: Ariana Grande & Dalton Gomez
In this week's episode of The Way They Were, we're selling sunsets galore with a couple who were PERFECT partners in lockdown, but couldn't really manage the bliss of forever.
Comedian Mary O'Connell spent her lockdown well, as she studied a romance which had one ruby slipper in showbizness land and one lace-up brogue firmly planted in the nine to five, when pop icon Ariana Grande decided that estate agent Dalton Gomez was selling the sunset she wanted to walk into. But it didn't take long for the gleam to fade as post-pandemic, she decided to put the marriage on the market for a quick sale and move on somewhere else...
As always, Grainne finds the hottest tea to spill, while Chantal adds the biscuit to dunk.... drink up people!

71: Tara Flynn: Twink & David Agnew
This week's episode will cause hysteria for listeners who hail from the Emerald Isle, while those from other parts of the globe will have an education like NO OTHER, as we hear all about the ultimately doomed 'romance' between Ireland's biggest star and her philandering, oboist husband.
It's not often you hear about a cheating oboist, but thanks to this week's guest, comedian, writer Tara Flynn, we get schooled in the messy, messy saga of Adele King - aka Twink and her on – off fella, David Agnew.
Grainne was obviously DELIGHTED at being able to do a deep dive into what is one of Ireland's biggest showbiz couples, while Chantal (and most of the rest of us) can only listen agape at the goings on between this pair, not least an infamous voice mail, which coined the phrase 'zip up yer Mickey' and remains part of Irish folk law forever more.
Buckle-up for this bumpy, but glorious ride!
Come and see Grainne and Chatal LIVE when they record two episodes of ‘The Way They Were’ at the Museum of Comedy in London, on Wednesday 25th October 2023.

Today's episode sees Grainne and Chantal go ape at this week's showbiz couple's shenanigans, as the wonderful and hilarious comedian Cally Beaton presents the real life fantasy world of Tim Burton and Helena Bonham Carter!
We get to live our most privileged lives vicariously through the oddball director and eccentric actor and their seperate homes, as it would appear you can't take the girl out of Primrose Hill.
If you can fall in love when one of you is dressed as a primate, you would think you would be in it for the long hall, so what on earth went wrong?
And what happens when the romance in wonderland turns into the nightmare before Christmas?
As always Grainne and Chantal take us head first into this hot mess of a gothic tale.
Grainne and Chantal are LIVE at the Museum of Comedy with a double bill of fantastic guests,as they record TWO episodes of The Way They Were on 25th October. Joining them to nominate two incredible celebrity car crash couples are comedians, Alexandra Haddow and Cariad Lloyd, tickets and info here

We listened to the fans and gave the world what it wanted with a live show at the London Podcast Festival!
Yes, Grainne and Chantal stepped out in front of the lights - and a baying crowd - to pick over the bones of another lost love chosen by a VERY special guest, comedian and online sensation, the fabulous Christopher Hall!
Chris leapt on stage armed with a brilliant couple for us all to get our teeth into, as we revisit the heady days of the 2010s when Miley Cyrus met and fell in love with Liam Hemsworth.
As always, Grainne's deep dives leave no stone unturned and let us explore the timeline right until the relationship's demise in 2020.
Thanks so much to everyone who came to the show, and of course to our incredible guest, the frighteningly talented, Chris Hall.

68: Monica Heisey: Minnie Driver & Matt Damon
Are you ready to relive the most brutal showbiz break up in history? Well buckle-up people, as this week's guest is the incredible comedy writer, Monica Heisey and her couple is none other than Minnie Driver and Matt Damon.
Grainne and Chantal are obviously delighted by the choice, as before things went all getting dumped on Oprah, 'Matt n' Minnie' were THE IT couple of Hollywood, and with good reason, as on paper it would seem these two were made for each other, so what went wrong?
Well, as always Grainne has managed to get all up in their business and we get transported back to the glamour of 1990s LA and we find out what a night out with these A-listers would be like and perhaps more crucially, if the romance's demise was written in the stars all along....

67: Dave The Bear: Kerry Katona & Brian McFadden
In today's episode of The Way They Were, Grainne and Chantal welcome some glamour to the show in the form of cabaret and burlesque star Dave the Bear! Now what kind of guest would such a character bring for us?
Here's a clue, they definitely wore boot-cut jeans (according to Grannie though, so did Anthony and Cleopatra), they were the boy and girl band royalty, and they certainly made us whole again (for a little while anyway), it HAS to be Brain McFadden and Kerry Katona!
Yes, thanks to Dave, we revel in the time Boyzone and Atomic Kitten collided, before it all went a bit Jeremy Kyle and Take-a-Break and before anyone even thought of venturing into the jungle.
How did it all start and how long did our star-crossed lovers have to keep it all a secret from the public AND Louis Walsh for?
This episode answers all the questions and serves as yet another warning to anyone thinking of tying the knot before the age of 40.

66: Russell Kane: Henry VIII & Catherine of Aragon
Well, hey nonny NO, you did NOT just create a whole, new religion just because you didn't fancy your wife anymore and the grass was green(sleeves)er on the other side of the fence?
That Henry VIII sure has a lot to answer for, including Brexit, in the opinion of this week's incredible guest, comedian and self-confessed romance king, Russell Kane.
Yes, this week, we're going all Tudor on your ass, as we get down into the business of KH the 8th and his first wife, Catherine of Aragon, who was selfish enough not to provide a male heir to the throne, so frankly, what else did she expect than being flung onto the scrap heap – it wasn’t the worst thing Henry ever did to his wife, after all.
As always Grainne and Chantal revel in the mess and let's face it, the drama of today's royal family has NOTHING on the escapades of this lot.
So, grab your lute, don your ruff, and get this Tudor feast, fit for a king into your ears.

The force is definitely with us for this episode, as Chantal and Grainne are the bridge over the troubled romance of Carrie Fisher and Paul Simon!
Yes, this week's guest, comedy writer Max Davis takes us into the amazing world of being young, famous and short in 1970s/80s New York, and what a scene it was - especially if Debbie Reynolds happened to be your mother...
As well as being a great story for us all, Max gets to imagine a world where he hangs out with his longtime crush on a wild night out with our erstwhile couple - let your imaginations run wild - Max certainly has.

64: Maisie Adam: Drake & Rihanna
Dry those tears, as your favourite celebrity romance podcast is BACK in your ears. Even Grainne and Chantal must stop with their hot girl summers when September strikes, as there are so many more failed showbiz romances to sift through and joining them with their own sieve is the wonderful, Maisie Adam!
Even though Maisie brought us a great couple to crack into, we could probably do her for trade descriptions, as this week's 'romance' is a little one-sided, to say the least.
Get ready to cringe through your feet, as we take a deep dive into the years old drunk dial that was Drake and Rihanna’s 'relationship' - believe us, it'll make you feel much better about any time you may have ill-advisedly shot your shot...the schadenfreude is on us and it's good to be back.
Don't miss your chance to see The Way They Were LIVE! They are at this year's London Podcast Festival on Friday September 15th and are DELIGHTED to be joined by Christopher Hall, fresh from his sell-out run at The Edinburgh Fringe - The Way They Were • Comedy • Kings Place

63: Glyn Fussell: Boy George & Jon Moss
For our season finale, we're travelling back to the 80s to explore the once top-secret relationship between Culture Club's Boy George and Jon Moss. Thanks to George's memoirs, our eyes have been opened to this deeply complicated love story, but during this episode we discover this story majorly lacked the 'love' part.
There's no one we'd rather spend our final episode with than the fabulous curator, party maker and self-professed Boy George aficionado, Glyn Fussell! Not only does Glyn bring the laughs, but he also fills this episode with compassion as we acknowledge the shift in queer culture and representation since the 1980s and the effects of overnight fame.
Grainne and Chantal return in September for another series of The Way They Were, but in the meantime, don't be a stranger! Hit them up on social media and send your thoughts to thewaytheywerepod@gmail.com. Thanks as always for your unwavering support and see you shortly! XX

This week our guest, the hugely talented comedy writer Tom Neenan, takes us on a journey through time and space as we open the lid on the tumultuous relationship of Elon Musk and Talulah Riley. She's a budding English actress, he's a globally known nerd sat on millions of dollars... what could go wrong? Well, whatever broke this couple up, it did the trick not once but twice. It's not often we get a couple who wed each other twice - what a joy! Listen now before Elon takes the episode down!

61: Rebecca Humphries: Stevie Nicks & Lindsey Buckingham
In today's episode of The Way They Were, the fabulous, actor and writer Rebecca Humphries joins Grainne and Chantal and if the 'rumours' are to be believed, have an amazing couple for us to delve into the world of. No I won't tell you sweet little lies, because we are heading into the catastrophe that is Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham and the heady days of Fleetwood Mac.
In this epic tale of sex, drugs and rock n' roll, we find out why our love struck pair eventually decided to go their own way and who thrived and who simply survived ... although no prizes for guessing the outcome of that.
So, without further ado, press play and don't stop thinking about tomorrow while you're at it!

60: Ben Miller: Oscar Wilde & Bosie Douglas
We're doing things a little differently this week, as this week's guest unwittingly becomes host, as our Grainne spent long days and nights researching the wrong couple! This however doesn't hinder the show in any way, shape or form, as Ben Miller host of the brilliant Bad Gays Podcast, brings us the relationship woes of none other than Oscar Wilde and his ne'er do well of a lover, Bosie!
It would seem that Grainne had already done lifelong research on this doomed affair and Chantal, as ever, says what we're all thinking.... now, either those curtains go, or I do.

59: Sadia Azmat: Mariah Carey & Tommy Mottola
On today's show, writer Sadia Azmat provides us all with a story of epicly batsh*t proportions in the shape of Mariah Carey and Tommy Mottola!
As per usual Grainne's deep drive and Chantal's encyclopedic knowledge of all things celeb allows us to immerse ourselves in the relationship in question, and I think you'll also be incredibly relieved that this particular union is no more...this is definitely NOT relationship goals.

58: Jack Bernhardt: Les Ferdinand & Dani Behr
This episode brings Grainne's investigative talents to the fore, as she practically went to the local library to get the knowledge on today's erstwhile loves which are brought to us by comedy writer and podcaster, Jack Bernhardt!
With Jack we dive straight into the world of 1990s football, with a premiership star and WAG ... who was a WAG before WAGs were WAGs... remember the lost love of Les Ferdinand and Dani Behr? You do now, don't you! What a whirlwind that was. You'll be exhausted, but feel grateful YOU don't have to go with them to the sticky carpeted clubs to be papped in unflattering lighting. ENJOY!

57: Desiree Burch: Susan Sarandon & Tim Robbins
Rejoice, rejoice for the day has finally arrived when we're allowed to go misty-eyed at the reverie of a VERY special pair of Hollywood exes, all thanks to this week's incredible guest, the fantastic comedian, Desiree Burch!
Desiree takes us all the way back to the beginning of the 1990s, when Susan Sarandon and Tim Robbins were couples goals for everyone in and outside of Tinsel Town. But, how on earth could such a holy alliance fail?
Well, as always Grainne's rigorous research and Chantal's encyclopedic knowledge give us all a pretty good idea of what probably went down and how then-child star Saoirse Ronan may (or may not) have been the catalyst which ended this once-solid couple.
We also get to find out why Ms Sarandan is forever linked with the world of ping pong - and it's got nothing to do with the movies!

56: Harriet Kemsley: Sienna Miller & Jude Law
Remember when we were all obsessed with the car keys in the bowl and the partying ways of London's Primrose Hill? The likes of Kate, Sadie, Pearl and that guy from Supergrass were rarely off the front pages of UK tabloids with their non-stop wild lifestyles. We were all glued to the exploits of the darlings of the scene, Jude Law and Sienna Miller, and it would seem for this week's fantastic guest, comedian Harriet Kemsley, this era is her Vietnam, as she never really left.
Grainne and Chantal revel in the mess and mayhem of the bright young things of the mid-noughties and you'll be right back with them too, so get the skinny jeans and tassels out of storage, mama's got a date on the hill!

55: Gareth Gwynn: Hattie Jacques & John Le Mesurier
This week's episode is a right old Carry On, and then some, as we're transported to bohemian life in 1950s London, thanks to this week's guest, comedy writer and presenter, Gareth Gwynn!
Grainne's deep-dive provides an education into the secret life of this week's star couple, Hattie Jacques & John Le Mesurier, whose public persona of respectability, masked a hotbed of affairs, parties that went on for days, and smokey jazz clubs.
This episode is a lesson in what happens when two eccentrics collide, and it'll make you wish you lived in that world too, where the likes of Tony Hancock, Dudley Moore and a guy called 'Bruce' are key players.
If you know who these legends of 50s, 60s and 70s sitcoms are, then you'll love this nostalgia fest, but if however, like our Chantal, you have NO IDEA about Carry On Films or Dad's Army, then buckle up and enjoy the ride, it's quite an education...

54: Darya: Justin Bieber & Selena Gomez
In today's episode, Grainne and Chantal welcome the incredible podcaster, illustrator and influencer, Darya aka 'Tiny Moron', to the show and OH MY GOODNESS what a treat she's brought for us all, as her couple is THE essence of the golden age of 2012 - none other than Justin Beiber and Selena Gomez!
Looking back on the pressure this young, hot, rich and famous couple were under, it's no wonder one of them ended up being photographed urinating in a bucket in public - we'd have all done the same.
But, why did this romance ultimately fail? As per usual, Grainne has done her deep dive, and you won't' Belieb the results ...

53: Gearóid Farrelly: Gayle Blakeney & Stefan Dennis
If you stan some 1980s Ramsey Street nostalgia, then this episode will feel like you're back in the days of watching Neighbours twice a day and wondering if Mr Udagawa will be selling Lassiters, but if what I've just said means NOTHING to you, then fear not, as you'll be in exactly the same state as Chantal in this episode and her life is richer for this education, and so yours will be too.
Who do we have to thank for this week's stunning couple of Stefan Dennis and Gillian Blakeney (aka Paul Robinson and Christina Alessi)?
Well, this is the work of comedian Gearoid Farrelly, who finds a kindred spirit in Grainne for this deep dive into the real and fictional love lives of this once aspirational couple. But, who has thrived and who has just simply survived? You'll have to listen to find out, and we're sure it's 'gonna make you feel good'.

52: Margaret Cabourn-Smith: Liam Gallagher & Patsy Kensit
The dream team are BACK and what a way to start the new series, as Grainne and Chantal welcome host of the fantastic 'Crushed' podcast, Margaret Cabourn-Smith to the show!
And Margaret certainly doesn't disappoint when it comes to the couple she's brought to the table, the creators of Cool Britannia themselves, Patsy Kensit and Liam Gallagher. Although after hearing this, you might decide that they are definitely / maybe, not as cool as you might have thought back in 1995. Or perhaps it was a more innocent time, you decide.
Management however will add the disclaimer that neither Patsy OR Liam were directly responsible for the invasion of any country...
It's GREAT to be back! X

51: Valentines Special: Our Cupid - Pete Davidson!
As the most romantic podcast on your podcast proving app, it would be remiss of us not to get stuck in to the season of love with a Valentine's special and in doing so, Chantal and Grainne have created their own Freaky Friday, as our hosts swap roles for one day only. Now the shoe is on the other foot as Chantal surprises Grainne with who this week's subject matter will be - and no spoilers, but it would appear Grainne is better at setting the clues than she is at guessing them.
But, don't worry, you don't need to riddle your way out of this one, as we'll just tell you right now, that this edition of The Way They Were is a Pete Davidson special!
Not only has this guy accomplished HUGE things in his comedy career before the age of 30, but he's spent most of his 20s dating some of the world's most beautiful and accomplished women, from Ariana to Kim K and Sally Webster from Coronation Street's daughter in between - it's all been going on, but who has thrived and who has survived and WHO does Grainne want Cher to spend the rest of her life with? It's all here...
Also, the team are taking a break for a few weeks, but don't worry, they'll be back in your ears on Good Friday, otherwise known as 7th April 2023 ... see you then XXX

You'll be masking your excitement at the memories this romance will invoke, but don't get catty with the hot gossip... because Andrew Lloyd-Webber and Sarah Brightman are the darlings of 80s Westend... Well, Sarah definitely was anyway.

The music mogul and creator of X-Factor have had a long documented relationship with the 80s singer, flip-flopping between friendship and romance for over 30 years, and as you can imagine, Grainne and Chantal were THRILLED to be able to take a deep dive into this incredible world of showbiz, heartbreak and oversharing on Twitter for your listening pleasure.
You'll come away with the conclusion that Cowell is indeed 'So Macho'.

Rosie has written books and hosted podcasts on the theme of break-ups and so, it's no surprise that she could match the intel of Grainne and the encyclopedic mind of Chantal when she asked to talk about a couple whose tandemic rise to fame, a public shaming and ultimate break-up made the front pages throughout the 1990s.... ladies and gentlemen, please be up-standing for this week's couple... 2: DAVID MILLS: Ellen DeGeneres and Anne Heche
Hello and welcome to this episode of TWTW and have Grainne (@grannymaguire) and Chantal (@chancentrate) got a treat for you? That's obviously a rhetorical question because their fantastic guest is the wonderful comedian and actor David Mills! As if that weren't enough, he came armed with a box of delights that is the lost love of Ellen DeGeneres and Anne Heche! Yep, it's a 90s thing, so put on your white, trouser suit and fantasize what a typical date with what is arguably the first famous lesbian couple would have been.
Help us marvel at what a big deal it was for our trailblazers to be stepping out together, when perhaps more eyebrows should have been raised at Anne's previous relationship to the one with Ellen ... but like I said, it's a 90s thing.
Who thrived and who survived? The answer may not be as obvious as you think...
