Mau Mau Uprising
*Trigger warning* Torture, human rights abuse and sexual abuse is spoken about frequently in this episode.
The Mau Mau Uprising was a pivotal event in Kenya's independence fight against Britain. British land theft in Kenya and the resulting displacement of various ethnic groups led to oppressive colonial rule. British injustices led to the Mau Mau movement being formed by radical activists, however the disproportionate reaction from Britain saw the horrors of the Hola Camp massacre and widespread use of concentration camps. The Mau Mau's persistent resistance weakened British colonial power, contributing to Kenya's eventual independence. We also touch on legal battles for restitution and the recognition of the Mau Mau's role in Kenya's history.

Accra: a Tale of Two Cities
The Year of the Return in 2019 marked a significant moment in Accra, Ghana, inviting people of African heritage to reconnect with their roots. In years since, the city has undergone a transformation in the wake of diasporan migration and tourism.
Yet as the diaspora are settling in Accra seeking refuge from racism and comparatively lower paid Western jobs, Accra's landscape is shifting. An influx of diasporan settlers has brought economic growth but is also raising questions about land ownership and exploitation. Rising disparities in Accra have not gone unnoticed, with property value pushing locals out of their neighbourhood. We explore the nuanced impact of diaspora migration and tourism within Accra's society, and the growing debate on globalisation and economic development. Who stands to benefit?

Patrice Lumumba was a distinguished Pan-African politician who served as the first Prime Minister of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) after the country gained independence. Lumumba was well-connected in both professional and social circles; however, as he became more politically active and vocal, calling for an end to Belgium's rule and advocating for the DRC's independence, he became a target of both the Belgian and US governments.

We discuss his documentary No U-Turn, a personal journey through a popular migration route from Lagos, Nigeria to Tangier, Morocco with the aims of reaching European shores. Queen Nanny of the Maroons
Queen Nanny, also known as Nanny of the Maroons, is Jamaica's only female national hero. This episode delves into the struggles and triumphs of the Maroons - enslaved people who gained freedom and formed their own communities. The British faced significant losses due to Maroon resistance, as Queen Nanny's strategic brilliance and leadership led to the freedom of over 1,000 enslaved individuals. The narrative takes an intriguing turn with peace treaties signed in 1739-1740, which granted the Maroons their freedom but transformed them into 'mountain police.' Queen Nanny's legacy is a symbol of strength, resistance, and the fight for freedom.

Diamonds Unveiled: Who owns Botswana?
Botswana was one of the world’s poorest countries at independence – highly dependent on their former coloniser and beef exports. In 1967, De Beers geologists found diamond bearing deposits, changing Botswana's trajectory. The nation had the fastest growing economy in the developing world for over 40 years. Some see Botswana’s story as that of success, as they reversed the “resource curse.” But is Botswana and De Beers' partnership truly equal?

Nigeria: The Aba Women's War
The Aba Women’s War took place in south eastern Nigeria in 1929. By the late 1920s, restrictive colonial practice affected women in Igbo, Efik and Ibibio ethnic groups in Nigeria as societal structures weakened. These women took their traditional practice of “sitting on a man” to rebel against British rule by destroying symbols of colonial rule. The war remains a key example of colonial authority challenged through a mass bodily display of female power - and is seen as a prelude to the African nationalism movement in decades to come.

Immigration: The People are Not the Problem
The West's treatment of refugees has become one of the most devastating human rights disasters in modern times. We’re joined by Andrei Popoviciu (@AndreiPopoviciu), an independent investigative journalist, reporter, audio producer, and photographer based in Dakar, Senegal. There are countless misconceptions surrounding the refugee crisis, and migration from the Global South to North. We discuss the reasons why people decide to leave their home country, their journey to Europe with associated risks, the militarisation of European borders and the effects of detention centres on mental health. We also explore how public perception and attitudes towards refugees can be improved.

The Comoros: a Neocolonial Split
Known as Africa's 'secret paradise,' the Comoros Islands are located in the Indian Ocean. Whilst it is is an independent state, the nation faces challenge concerning Mahoré, the fourth island - as it remains under the administration of France, effectively creating an EU border. The living conditions for residents of Ngazidja, Mwali, and Nzwani, the other three islands, continue to be challenging which has compelled many Comorans to reach Mahoré. Over the past two decades, at least 10,000 individuals have tragically lost their lives making this perilous journey to Mahoré. We discuss how this situation came to be.

Ghana: Fast Fashion Fallout
Around 15 million clothing items flood Accra, Ghana every week, mostly from Europe, North America and Australia. These items are mostly donations to charity bins, or cast-offs that are no longer needed. 40% of clothing received in Ghana is unacceptable for use, ending up as waste. Is this the continuation of a colonialist relationship - with the Western world dumping waste on the continent? We discuss.

Liberia's American Shadow (rerun)
Quite often – and misleadingly, Liberia is referred to as one of the only two African countries that were not colonised. Whilst Liberia was not carved up by Europeans in the Scramble for Africa, the country was actually founded by the American colonisation society, and many freed black Americans were sent to live in Liberia, despite living in America for generations. These black Americans and their descendants ended up controlling and colonising indigenous Liberians for over 100 years.

Thiaroye Massacre
On 1st December 1944, the French army opened fire on West African soldiers in Thiaroye, a suburb in Dakar, Senegal. These African soldiers previously fought for France during World War II, some even becoming prisoners of war in the process. Their crime? Asking for equal compensation for their war effort. We uncover this act of colonial violence towards Africans, and the erasure of colonies’ contribution in World War II. We also look at the attitudes leading to the tragedy and its legacy seen in Senegalese film and theatre.

Cocoa: a Bitter Reality
Chocolate is something we all know and love to consume. However, it’s no secret that cocoa as a commodity has its roots in something a lot more sinister. Human rights campaigners continue calling on global chocolate companies to recognise the role the cocoa trade has played in enabling poverty and child labour, particularly in countries such as Cote d’Ivoire and Ghana - West Africa's top cocoa producers. Does the continent remain, in the words of Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo, locked in a colonial-style relationship with the world’s chocolate manufacturers?

The CFA Franc: Neo-colonial currency?
The CFA franc is one of Africa’s most baffling and misunderstood currencies. Introduced in 1945 to keep France’s African colonies under control, it has withstood decolonisation. Today, the CFA franc operates in 14 African countries and remains managed by France. Its existence remains controversial, with the currency described as ‘one of the straitjackets that keeps the African countries dependent on France.’ In this episode, we unravel the history of the CFA franc and its potential future.

Andrée Blouin: Central Africa's unsung heroine
Andrée Blouin fought ardently for her belief in independence from imperial power. We look at her life, legacy and how colonial law impacted her experiences: from growing up in an orphanage, to losing her son from a treatable illness. Blouin used her experiences to advocate for women's rights both against traditional customs and European imperialism. How did she end up on the periphery of post-independent African history?

The Agojie: Dahomey’s Warrior Women
*This episode may contain The Woman King spoilers*
The Agojie were fearless and skilled warrior women in the Dahomey Kingdom. By the mid 1800s, the all-female regiment was in its thousands, outmuscling rival kingdoms and participating in annual warfare. They lived in the royal palace and were taught how to fight and survive from an early age. However, the Agojie's existence is thought to have upset the invading French's understanding of gender roles, and their invasion led to the disbanding of the Agojie. Why has their history been neglected until recently? Let's dig in.

China X Africa: mutual gain or neo-colonisers?
As China looks for resources to benefit its growing consumption, African countries are looking for funds for development. We're now seeing Chinese state-owned firms building large scale infrastructure within the continent in exchange for access to minerals and oil. In 2000 Sino-African trade was 10 billion dollars. Just fourteen years later, this grew to 220 billion dollars.
How did this happen? Is China looking to be in their words “friends of Africa” or are they a new set of colonisers?

The Aksum kingdom was a wealthy African civilisation and a major empire of the ancient world, thriving for centuries as a prosperous society and a spiritual home for the Ethiopian Orthodox Church. During the kingdom’s peak power, it conquered southern Arabia. This episode sees us discuss the empire's rich history, and how amazing it is that a lot of Aksum's artefacts can be found in Ethiopia, not exclusively in the British Museum....

Burundi's Unifying Prince
Prince Louis Rwagasore was a key political figure in Burundi's history. He was known as the unifying prince as he worked to unite the country's ethnic groups, which Belgium had divided. In 1958 he established the Party for National Unity and Progress (UPRONA), and in September 1961, they successfully won the elections to lead an independent Burundi. But on Friday 13th October 1961, Prince Louis Rwagasore was assassinated, only 16 days after being sworn in as prime minister.

Oil: Africa's neocolonial crisis
Africa contains five of the top thirty oil-producing nations, accounting for 85% of the continent’s oil reserves. However, unethical practices by some oil multinational corporations have seen social movements by host communities and human rights groups. Oil exploration has led to underdevelopment, pollution, and the eroding of traditional practices within host regions. In this episode we'll look at the relationship between oil companies and local governments, and how this has furthered corruption within Nigeria and Angola.

Uganda's Environmental Challenge with Heizal Nagginda
We're joined by Heizal Nagginda, a climate and environmental activist from Uganda, and founder of Climate Operation (@climateoperation). The organisiation's mission is to educate Ugandan children and communities about climate change and its intersection with other social issues. We discuss the effects of climate change in Uganda and the wider continent, the world's response to climate change, and why we see Africans suffer disproportionately compared to those living in wealthier continents.

Kony 2012: Activism or Slacktivism?
Around a decade ago, one of the first “viral” moments of the social media age took place. This involved American men launching a campaign to make Joseph Kony the most famous man in the world. Kony, the leader of the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) (which had existed for decades prior), had been indicted for war crimes and crimes against humanity. But was this a case of activism, slacktivism, or white saviourism on a global scale?

Nasser's Path to Presidency
Gamal Abdel Nasser was an Egyptian political leader and second post-independence President. Nasser joined Egypt's Royal Military Academy in 1937, and whilst in the military, he helped form the Free Officers Movement. In July 1952, the movement overthrew the monarchy in a coup and led Egypt into complete independence. Two years later, Nasser emerged from behind-the-scenes and positioned himself as Prime Minister, and then in 1956, he became President. Follow us on IG: itsacontinentpod and Twitter: itsacontinent. Guinean Market Women’s Revolt
This week we're in Guinea, looking at how the actions of market women went on to shape the policy of their nation through standing up against corruption. The cohesive nature of these demonstrations goes to show how market women became the most powerful collective group within their society. The revolt inspired other Guineans to speak up against Toure's oppressive regime, seeing him release political prisoners, culminating in an end to his ambition. The Guinean Market Women's revolt is remembered on August 27th, with Guinean young women and girls reminded of the power and influence they possess. Ceuta & Melilla: Europe's African Frontiers (rerun)
Ceuta and Melilla are enclaved cities where the European Union has land borders with the African continent, as Spain continues to lay claims within Morocco. What is Spain doing in Morocco in the first place, and what are the wider implications? In this episode, we discuss why the two cities have been described as Europe’s “dirty secret" - the over-surveillance of the walls separating Africa from Europe, and the mistreatment and brutality towards those seeking a better life in Europe.

Vera Chirwa: Malawi's Fearless Fighter
Vera Chirwa was Malawi’s first female lawyer and became a founding member of the Malawi Congress Party and the Nyasaland African Women’s league. Chirwa’s belief in multiparty democratic rule came at a time when a dangerous despot, Hastings Banda ruled a newly independent Malawi. In 1982, Banda ended up charging Vera and her husband Orton with treason, and the following year the court sentenced the couple to death. In this episode we look at Vera Chirwa's life and her drive to keep going despite being held as a prisoner of conscience in horrendous conditions.
Trigger Warning: this episode contains descriptions of police brutality and solitary confinement which some listeners may find upsetting.

Benevolent Imperialism with Kehinde Andrews
To recognise Black History month in the UK, we're joined by the academic, activist and author Professor Kehinde Andrews. Kehinde is a professor of Black Studies at Birmingham City University and has written several books, his latest being ‘The New Age of Empire: How Racism and Colonialism Still Rule the World.’ In this episode we discuss black British identity, immigration, and how colonisation has shifted into its current form: benevolent imperialism.
Kehinde's projects include the Harambee Organisation of Black Unity, and Make It Plain, the home of black radical thought. In 2017 Birmingham City University became the first university in Europe to launch an undergraduate Black Studies degree course. Current offerings are undergraduate and MA courses.

Museveni's Hold on Power (Part 2)
We're back in Uganda for the second part of our episodes focussing on Yoweri Museveni. This time we discuss the way his government silenced Bobi Wine's activities during the 2021 elections through excessive force and sanctioned killings. An internet blackout took place in Uganda, limiting reporting on internal conditions; however the Red Pearl Movement and social media has allowed Uganda's story to be shared with the international community. This episode looks at the extreme and violent measures taken by Museveni's administration to ensure his hold on power.

Museveni's Rise to Power (Part 1)
Yoweri Museveni is a name you may have heard of during Uganda’s most recent elections where he was up against his main political rival Bobi Wine. This presidential election was entangled by fraud, threats, and sanctioned killings - but how did Ugandan politics get to this point? This episode is the first of a two-parter. We’ll look at Yoweri Museveni's rise to power: how his positioning as Uganda's liberator and increased stability for the nation gave way to a ban on other political campaigns and the removal of Presidential term limits. Museveni has remained in power for more than 30 years.

Menelik II: Ethiopia's Emperor
During the Scramble for Africa, Italy was eager to develop a 'second Roman Empire' within the continent. It set its sights on Ethiopia, which they were 'awarded' during the Berlin Conference of 1884-85. Now, all they had to do was remove the Ethiopian government and occupy the land. This proved easier said than done. At the time, Ethiopia was under the leadership of Emperor Menelik II, who was able to lead and defend his country against the Italian army. The Emperor helped to put Ethiopia on the map at a time where many African countries were being destroyed and exploited.

Freetown's British Origins
Freetown is the capital city of Sierra Leone, a country in Western Africa. The name of the city has links to its origin as a British colony used to repatriate freed black people from across the British Empire (Jamaica and Canada) as well as other places as far and wide as The Congo and Lake Malawi. Britain insisted Freetown represented humanity, justice, and freedom but it didn’t represent any of those things. It stole land, got local chiefs to sign dodgy contracts, and highlighted the false ideology of European superiority. In this episode, we look at how Britain annexed land in Freetown, and later on, Sierra Leone.

Togo: Resisting Authoritarian Rule
We're joined by Farida Nabourema, a Togolese human rights activist, writer and Pan-Africanist who has fought for democracy in her country since her teenage years. Farida founded the "Faure Must Go" movement in 2011, where she organised Togolese youths to stand against the dictatorial regime of the Gnassingbés. The movement captures the civil resistance movement in Togo, of which Nabourema is one of the most well-known leaders. In 2014 she published her book La Pression de l'Oppression, encouraging resistance from those who are oppressed. In 2018, Time Magazine listed Farida as one of the Four Crusaders Keeping the Dream of Democracy Alive and in 2021, Apolitical named her among the 100 Most Influential People in Gender Policy.
In this episode we discuss Farida's lived experience under the Gnassingbé regime, the changing face of social media as a tool for activism and the West's oppressive policies within the African continent.

Sundiata Keita: Founder of the Mali Empire
In our final episode of season 3, we're exploring West Africa during the 13th century and the founder of the Mali Empire, Sundiata Keita. The Mali Empire was one of the continent's wealthiest and most prominent empires spanning across modern-day Mali, Senegal, Guinea, Mauritania, Gambia and Burkina Faso. Sundiata's life story is one of overcoming adversity, surviving jealous family members, and conquering the enemy. His story gives a fascinating insight into how oral traditions were kept alive and passed on from one generation to the next.

Ceuta & Melilla: Europe’s African frontiers
Ceuta and Melilla are enclaved cities where the European Union has land borders with the African continent, as Spain continues to lay claims within Morocco. What is Spain doing in Morocco in the first place, and what are the wider implications? In this episode, we discuss why the two cities have been described as Europe’s “dirty secret" - the over-surveillance of the walls separating Africa from Europe, and the mistreatment and brutality towards those seeking a better life in Europe.

Togo's Gnassingbé Dynasty
In this episode, we learn about Africa’s longest-serving dynasties, the Gnassingbé dynasty. They have ruled Togo since the late 1960s. The rise of the dynasty began with Gnassingbé Eyadéma, who forged a successful military career and became the country’s President. Following Gnassingbé’s death in 2005, his son Faure Gnassingbé became President following a questionable set of parliamentary changes, and like father, like son, his rulership has failed the Togolese people.

Chagos Islands: Britain’s last African colony
The Chagos Islands are located in the Indian Ocean, home to Chagossians. However, the islands' sovereignty remains disputed to this day. The UK continues laying claims to the islands, despite being urged to end its unlawful occupation. In this episode we’ll focus on the expulsion of Chagossians from their home country, and the steps the British government have taken to make it more difficult for Chagos islanders to return home.

Slavery’s Impact on Africa with Karis
We're back with a bonus episode before we return to season 3! We discuss the consequences of the trans-atlantic slave trade on the continent with our special guest, Karis. We talk about the notion of Africans selling other Africans into slavery by applying the correct lens to examine a pre-colonial continent, how the slave trade gave way to European colonisation and the importance of education and cultural exchange as a solution to diaspora wars.

Nyerere's Tanzanian Vision
In this episode, we're in Tanzania discussing its stint in socialism. The country's first post-independence President, Julius Nyerere, introduced the Arusha Declaration. A vital element of the declaration was the introduction of Ujamaa which means family-hood in Swahili. Ujamaa focused on freedom, equality and unity. He believed that colonialism had brought capitalism and individualistic thinking into Tanzania and across the African continent, and capitalism went against pre-colonial traditional African culture, which was more community-oriented. Nyerere was an iconic figure and was often considered to be Africa's conscience.

Somalia's Scientific Socialism
In this episode we discuss Somalia's socialist government between 1969-1991. This movement was led by Mohamed Siad Barre, a Somali Communist politician. Under the Supreme Revolutionary Council, Barre transformed Somalia into a one-party Marxist-Leninist communist state, renaming the country the Somali Democratic Republic and adopting a concept called scientific socialism, with support from the Soviet Union. Whilst Barre’s rule had initial success: modernisation, nationalisation and anti-tribalism, defeat in the Ogaden War triggered Somali rebellion and dissatisfaction. You can find sources below.

Chad: Legacies of France's African Empire
In this episode, we discuss France's relationship with its African colonies, specifically Chad. Chad became part of the French empire during the Scramble for Africa and successfully gained its independence in 1960 following the empire's disbandment. France's response to this change was to form alliances with its former colonies in order to maintain some of the political and economic benefits they had garnered during their colonisation. These alliances still stand today, with the French government providing military support, overlooking human rights violations, and influencing Chad's currency. Franco-African relations poses an interesting question, whether France can ever leave Africa?

Namibia's 'Forgotten' Genocide
The Herero and Namaqua genocide is still not widely discussed or taught. Between 1904-1907, hundreds of thousands of Herero and Namaqua people were starved and tortured to death in response to a rebellion against German occupation and theft of land in Namibia. In this episode we discuss racist and fascist ideologies which led to this event (and later on, the holocaust), medical racism, and reparations that Namibians continue to demand from Germany to this day. Trigger warning: torture. We describe graphic details around concentration camps, which some may find upsetting. Sources are below.

Malagasy Uprising
In this episode we're in Madagascar, one of Africa’s island countries and the fourth largest island in the world. We explore the Malagasy Uprising which took place between 1947-1948. The uprising saw thousands of Malagasy people fight the French to regain ownership of their country. The French government had suspicions that the uprising wasn’t just caused by Malagasy groups, but also their European rivals: Britain and America. Following the uprising, France soon regained control of the country, as they were adamant that "the future of Madagascar would be inseparably linked to France's future."

Cameroon's Anglophone Crisis
Following Germany's defeat in WW1, Cameroon was split and handed over to France and Britain - with the majority of the country under French rule alongside a small British minority. Upon reunification, this uneven split has lead to the country facing a socio-political issue involving minority English speakers and the declaration of the self-declared state Ambazonia. In this episode we discuss the history of Cameroon and how this separatist movement came to be. Don't forget to leave us a review on your podcast platform! Western Sahara - Africa's Last Colony
Western Sahara is often described as Africa’s last colony. Since 1884 the people of Western Sahara, the Sahrawis, have been fighting to regain access and ownership of their country from their former coloniser Spain, and most recently Morocco. The United Nations describes Western Sahara’s current situation as an ‘incomplete process of decolonisation,’ however, their ability to bring it to an end has yet to yield positive results. In this episode, we explore Western’s Sahara’s story and the people and organisations involved in its past, and those who continue to determine its future.

Gaddafi's Pan-African Motives
Colonel Muammar Gaddafi was a divisive figure, as he represented very different things to different people. We begin the first episode of season two by discussing what motivated Gaddafi's Pan-Africanist ideas, as well as the impact of Arab colonisation in Northern Africa and the idea behind the term "sub-Saharan Africa".

Ghana's Independence Battle
On the 6th March 1957, Ghana gained independence from British colonial rule, changing its name from the Gold Coast. In this episode we discuss the events leading to independence - from the mistreatment of African soldiers fighting for Allied forces in WW2, to a new constitution. We also draw similarities to Ghana's road to independence with the recent Black Lives Matter protests, demonstrating how black people have continuously been campaigning for equality.

Wangari, Kenya's mother
Wangari Maathai was a distinguished environmentalist born in Kenya during British colonial rule. As a well-educated black woman, she used her knowledge and experience to educate and mobilise others in her community to fight for change, but faced numerous challenges: from discrimination at work to threats from the Kenyan government. Her determination and fearlessness never waned as she continued to fight for the environment, human rights and democracy in Kenya. In 2004, she became the first black African woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize.

Liberia's American Shadow
Quite often – and misleadingly, Liberia is referred to as one of the only two African countries that were not colonised. Whilst Liberia was not carved up by Europeans in the Scramble for Africa, the country was actually founded by the American colonisation society, and many freed black Americans were sent to live in Liberia, despite living in America for generations. These black Americans and their descendants ended up controlling and colonising indigenous Liberians for over 100 years.

The Scramble for the DRC
From 1880-1920 the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) was under the rule of King Leopold II of Belgium. Within that time period, the atrocities committed under his rule led to the loss of 10 million Congolese lives, half of the country's population. In this episode, we explore the lead-up and subsequent rule of King Leopold II and the impact this had on the DRC.

Burkina Faso's Icon
Thomas Sankara was the president of Burkina Faso from 1983-1987. He remains an inspiration to young Africans and those committed to a pan-Africanist future. Nigerian Civil War
The Nigerian Civil War took place from 1967-1970. For a recent historical event that inflicted trauma onto many Nigerians, this story still appears stifled compared to other modern historical events. The total number of Nigerian-Igbo people killed in this conflict is still unknown but it is estimated to be in the millions and it's important that we recognise this. We'll talk about how this war came to be, Britain's involvement in this conflict and the longer reaching consequences from the civil war for Nigeria and the wider continent today.
