Overlord is Wolfenstein come to life replete with creepy Nazi experimentation, cool action sequences, moments of tension, and a tight screenplay that stays on target (the story is told over a relatively short period of time). It was surprisingly good and I would recommend it to fans of action and horror. It is light on character (good performances), but that's to be expected with an ensemble cast in a genre picture. If you require sensible dialogue, a plot you can track, and a likable cast - 100% skip this flick, but if you like to live dangerously, rent this movie and let it wash over you. Mission Impossible movies are just pure fun, but truth be told, you probably have to be a fan of the franchise to enjoy them and understand what they are: over-the-top action films with convoluted plots filled with betrayals, ticking timers, world ending consequences, and incredible action sequences. They are spy movies in a sense, but action movies first. Spoiler: there will probably be more Mission Impossible flicks (the world doesn't end), and I am totally okay with it. Bring 'em on! Get your giant box of popcorn and check your expectations at the door. It's a summer flick about a giant prehistoric shark starring Jason Statham, and that's exactly what you're going to watch. Truth be told: I liked it. The movie follows (not as well) in the footsteps of Lake Placid, and should not be taken seriously at all. Kick your feet up and get stupid. A Quiet Place is a good movie, but it is not perfect. There are some logical inconsistencies with the monsters, but the action is well paced and the performances are excellent. It's a fresh take on monsters as well as the whole post-apocalyptic thing which has been done to death. Rent it - it's worth the watch. Check our Hush and Don't Breathe for similar ideas. This is one of my favorite vampire movies of all time. It has so much going for it and I could have easily talked about this movie for an hour or more. Chris Sarandon is outstanding as Jerry Dandridge. He has all of the traits of a classic vampire: he's charming, magnetic, dangerous, and powerful. So many of the great moments of tension in this flick resist the urge to devolve into a bloodbath (a hallmark of the 80s) that it almost feels referential to the black and white vampire films of old. When I was younger I saw the people involved in the Irish/English conflict in very black and white terms. Irish good - English bad. As I have gotten older I have come to realize that history is more complex than is depicted in film, and Black '47 is no different. The villains are bad and the heroes are good, and the beats occur as expected. It's a basic revenge film. On the one hand its simplicity is a strength. The film doesn't try to do too much, and it executes the simple plot effectively. Soldado at best is an echo of the far superior, Sicario. It has moments of tension and gun-play that feels real and exciting, but the stakes lack punch, and consequently I never found myself worried that Alejandro (Del Toro) and Graver (Josh Brolin) were in mortal danger. I always felt they'd pull through. The Macer (Blunt) character in Sicario was someone I could personally relate to much easier than the seemingly indestructible and elite operators that wade through scores of baddies in Soldado. Macer (Blunt) was more sympathetic in the "in over her head" role in the original. Soldado also failed to capture the sense of dread and tension that hung over every scene in Sicario. This lead to much more muted conflicts that never felt as fulfilling. Overall, I'd recommend Soldado, but it's nothing to write home about despite some killer performances from Brolin and Del Toro. Mandy is gory, beautiful, compelling, fun, and utterly bananas. It's clear that Cosmatos had a specific vision when he set out to make this flick, and his determination to create what he wanted is obvious in just about every frame. Mandy is a film of risk taking and - love him or hate him - Nick Cage is one of the great risk takers in Hollywood. I was pumped to dive back into this episode of television, because nothing is more exciting than science fiction technology run amok. Today I talk about the bar of television being raised to the point of where some things just have to be good, and in the case of this particular episode of of TV, I talk quite a bit about the performances and the cast. Additionally, I spend some time on the way our expectations and set-up and then spun 180 degrees with clever writing and well-timed plot points. This isn't a perfect episode of television. The rules of the technology appear to be a little loose, but overall it's outstanding and a solid "love it" from me. I wasn't sure where I wanted to go with covering Beirut, and ended up spending most of my time discussing the outrage that surrounded the trailer (and the film itself) which I had no idea existed until I actually watched and read about the movie. There is a moment in this flick where Ruby (Jena Malone) climbs on top of a corpse and makes out with it while masturbating. There is another scene where a mountain lion breaks into Jesse's (Elle Fanning) motel room which turns out to be a great moment of thematic foreshadowing for consumption, hunting, and predatory intent. Constant themes that play out in the film. The Neon Demon is bizarre and it will mesmerize you right up until the end credits where you will ask yourself, "What did I just watch?" The ending of Hereditary is a crucible not just for Annie and her family, but also for the audience in that it will separate the lovers of Hereditary from those who thought it was just "okay" or those who say it was "great up until the ending", because make no mistake - things get bananas. In Real Quick fashion I don't spend much time on the plot of the film, but I do offer up a spoiler section post-credits to discuss the ending (that crucible I mentioned) which I happened to love, especially on a re-watch as the clues became more obvious. Without spoiling too much in the show notes I will simply say that I loved this movie for very specific reasons which will be revealed to you by the end of the podcast. Upgrade was a pleasant surprise and although the trailer shows a bit of levity in the film (Grey joking around with Stem) the movie has a very serious and heavy tone. If you're into lean science fiction that isn't too 'out there' vis-à-vis planet hopping or alien invasion stuff, you'll dig it. It fees like a Neil Stephenson or William Gibson novel come to life (read: cyberpunk) and I love that sub-genre of sci-fi - especially when you keep the narrative tight and simple. My verdict: check it out, you won't be disappointed. Reverend Toller (Hawke) is experiencing a crisis of faith and has been since the death of his son in Iraq. The narrative flirts with balancing destructive and creative forces, and it also gets into hypocrisy and our inability to think critically when compromised emotionally. First Reformed didn't play out exactly like I though it would but it did present some interesting ideas to consider. The idea of balancing hope and despair (read: wisdom) against a world of extremes. The Michael character introduces some environmental extremism (global activism) into the narrative that wasn't exactly expected, but it seems to serve the film despite - at times - being a bit preachy (pun intended). Plenty of meat on the bone, and in this episode - like Red Sparrow - I made a decision not to spoil the ending as it is largely interpretive. I went into Red Sparrow with all the normal expectations: Jennifer Lawrence running around naked, neck snaps, the whole Russian aesthetic thing, and of course cloak and dagger spy-craft. I was aware of the baggage (from social media) surrounding Jennifer Lawrence's decisions to take part in a film that has moments of extreme sexual violence, but I never felt like it was a gimmick or a cheap storytelling device ala the slaughtering of nude camp counselors in the 80s. Although the run-time is a bit up there (2 hours and 20 minutes) Red Sparrow is worth a watch. I just got done watching Ready Player One, and it has my head swimming with all kinds of crazy ideas. Are skills transferable from the real world into the OASIS? Like if you're a martial arts expert can you fight more effectively? How about virtual labor? Clearly that could only happen in a science fiction story, right? Wrong! Check out the article on Forbes about Chinese gold farmers! Plenty to like in this flick, but a little weak on character. I wanted to learn more about Halliday. I finally get off my butt to watch a superhero movie, because I know how much you guys all love them. I decided to kick things off with Justice Leauge, and boy there is some Zack Snyder things going on in this one. There are some things to like in this flick, but to be honest I didn't love it. The final 30 minutes felt like I was in a bad video game from the late 90s.
