"Sights From a Steeple" By Nathaniel Hawthorne [38]
So many of the stories you read here are little microscopic looks at the day in the life of one or two individuals, or animals. This sketch by Nathaniel Hawthorne is a bit different. Standing atop a steeple, he observes the movements of an entire town at a specific point in time. There is no dialogue here – no certainty of a character's thoughts or actions. There is only speculation, and beautiful descriptive language. It's unique and beautiful. Hawthorne is of course best known for his legendary novel "The Scarlet Letter". Love our shorts?
