On this episode, Scott, Leonard Maltin, and Perri Nemiroff discussing four new releases – The Mule, Mary Poppins Returns, Spider-man: Into the Spider-Verse, Aquaman, and If Beale Street Could Talk. The critics also give their thoughts on Mission: Impossible- Fallout that is out on Blu-ray this week.

The Mule is the latest offering from director Clint Eastwood. Eastwood stars as Earl Stone, a man in his 80s who is broke, alone, and facing foreclosure of his business when he is offered a job that simply requires him to drive. Easy enough, but, unbeknownst to Earl, he’s just signed on as a drug courier for a Mexican cartel. He does well—so well, in fact, that his cargo increases exponentially, and Earl is assigned a handler. As his money problems become a thing of the past, Earl’s past mistakes start to weigh heavily on him, and it’s uncertain if he’ll have time to right those wrongs before law enforcement, or the cartel’s enforcers, catch up to him. The film also stars Bradley Cooper, Laurence Fishburne, Michael Peña, Dianne Wiest and Andy Garcia.

Emily Blunt brings the iconic character of Mary Poppins back to life in Mary Poppins Returns. It’s an all new original musical and sequel, Mary Poppins is back to help the next generation of the Banks family find the joy and wonder missing in their lives following a personal loss. Emily Blunt stars as the practically-perfect nanny with unique magical skills who can turn any ordinary task into an unforgettable, fantastic adventure. The film also stars Lin-Manuel Miranda, Ben Whishaw, Emily Mortimer, Colin Firth and David Warner.

Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the creative minds behind The Lego Movie and 21 Jump Street, bring their unique talents to a fresh vision of a different Spider-Man Universe, with a groundbreaking visual style that’s the first of its kind. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse introduces Brooklyn teen Miles Morales, and the limitless possibilities of the Spider-Verse, where more than one can wear the mask. The film features the voices of Shameik Moore, Jake Johnson, Mahershala Ali, Brian Tyree Henry, Liev Schreiber, Hailee Steinfeld, John Mulaney, Luna Lauren-Valez, Lily Tomlin, and Nicolas Cage.

Aquaman directed by James Wan is the latest offering from WB and DC into the DCEU. It stars Jason Momoa, Amber Heard, Willem Dafoe, Patrick Wilson, Dolph Lundgren, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, and Oscar winner Nicole Kidman. From Warner Bros. Pictures and director James Wan comes an action-packed adventure that spans the vast, visually breathtaking underwater world of the seven seas, “Aquaman,” starring Jason Momoa in the title role. The film reveals the origin story of half-human, half-Atlantean Arthur Curry and takes him on the journey of his lifetime—one that will not only force him to face who he really is, but to discover if he is worthy of who he was born to be…a king.

If Beale Street Could Talk is the latest film from Moonlight director Barry Jenkins. In this feature film adaptation of James Baldwin’s moving story of love in the face of injustice, the film is told through the eyes of Tish, a nineteen-year-old girl, in love with Fonny, a young sculptor who is the father of her child. Tish and Fonny have pledged to get married, but Fonny is falsely accused of a terrible crime and imprisoned. Their families set out to clear his name, and as they face an uncertain future, the young lovers experience a kaleidoscope of emotions–affection, despair, and hope. The film stars Kiki Layne, Stephan James, Colman Domingo, Teyonah Parris, Michael Beach, Dave Franco, Diego Luna, Pedro Pascal, Ed Skrein, Brian Tyree Henry, and Regina King.
