Ep 259: Creating Theatre to Inspire The Next Generation with Tuyet Van Huynh and Tuyen
“Feeling a responsibility Representing a community that have never seen themselves on stage” what's the experience of creating theatre for minority groups?
Tuyet Van Huynh and Tuyen Do the writer and producer of the first piece of Vietnamese theatre to be staged in the UK are joining Harriet, Emma and author Amanda Prowse to share the experience of realising Tuyen's story in theatre.
Summer Rolls follows main character "Mai" over 20 years, the audience sees as she uses photography as a tool to portray her feelings of being a child of "dual identity as a second generation immigrant".
Tuyen Do talks about finding the confidence to share this story, to write from her lived experience and find her own voice within theatre. She explains that whilst writing the play she felt a "responsibility in representing a community that have never seen themselves on stage”.
Tuyet Van Huynh the producer, tells the badass ladies that she was striving to create roles within the crew for minority groups, representing women of colour in theatre and how the ladies are hoping to inspire the next generation of artists who are of Vietnamese decent to make their visions and lived experience a creative reality.
