As a barrister, there is a limit to what you can achieve and I wanted to achieve more and leave a legacy. The fun is always in the building and when it gets to a stage where it’s just maintaining I’m bored with it. I wanted to spend my life building something – with both its highs and lows. When I started in business there was a bullying culture and it was the first thing I had to face and deal with. One person can keep everyone else down in a bullying culture We took on stores that had been through some sort of trauma – no culture, absent management. Everyone is different. Contentment for one person will not be contentment for another and not everyone is looking for inspiration. Whatever people choose to do if it brings them happiness and contentment then it is right for them. If you can inspire someone to be more than they thought they could be then you are a true leader Having identified that I needed to build a management team the challenge was to attract and recruit the best managers. I needed people who were self-motivated and liked mentorship as an approach rather than to be managed.
