Episode 041 | Unmarked | Ryan Babel
Introducing a new series in collaboration with Out Of Home x SoccerBible: UNMARKED. A fortnightly show by real fans, where we’ll get closer to footballers, allowing them to open up and offer a side of them that isn’t seen by the media. The first guest is none other than ex-Liverpool & Ajax star, Ryan Babel. Kicking things off with the popular ‘What Made You Smile’ segment (3:12), where everyone speaks on their personal highlights of the past week. Ryan recalls growing up in Southeast Amsterdam, (11:31), and life as a youth from the Bijlmer neighbourhood. Babel then touches on graduating from Ajax’s youth academy and breaking into the first team at 17, (21:32) and his experience of moving to England when he signed for Liverpool (28:08). The fleet-footed winger shares his earliest memories of dealing with the media (40:42) and how PR training could have helped him. Ryan is honest and open when talking about his experiences of racism within football (63:54). The interview was recorded back in July, and is revealing, humorous, and inspiring.
