198: Black and Gay, Back In The Day with Marc Thompson | Part 1

By Spirit Studios & Christopher Sweeney

Today we are chatting to certified national treasure of the queer community, Marc Thompson. Marc has set up @blackandgaybackintheday, a digital archive and podcast which celebrates black queer life and its history. Today we are delving deep into the archive, discussing what it was like growing up as a black queer man in Brixton in the 1980’s, why the Pet Shop Boys are the ultimate trailblazers of house music and why it’s important we find out who exactly was sniffing poppers at the back of Heaven nightclub in 1986.

You can listen to Marc’s playlist “It’s A Sin – The Black Album” here. - ‘These are the songs that Black queer people loved, listened to and danced to in the days of the HIV epidemic and they all left their mark on the Black queer scene at the time.’

You can listen to the Black and Gay, Back in the Day podcast here and visit the instagram page here.

Survey of British social attitudes (https://www.theguardian.com/society/2022/sep/22/majority-of-uk-public-agree-with-liberal-views-on-race-and-sexual-identity-annual-poll) revealed that the UK population largely has liberal views and those taking "anti-woke" positions on "culture wars" issues are firmly in the minority.
