How Jacob found the courage to speak out about an abusive past
Ep 13: You’re finishing a night-shift at work. You receive a text from a family member. The person is requesting to see you right now. They need to talk and it is not a conversation that can happen over the phone.
You arrive at the family member’s house. They are visibly upset. Then they break down. They are crying in front of you. It is at this point that they tell you their truth. As you listen to their story, you are deeply shaken by its familiarity. And you realise that it’s time to unburden yourself of a secret of your own.
Today we discover how being forced to live with the secret of child abuse has impacted Jacob’s perception of himself as a man. And ask, what can be done to help other male victims of child abuse speak their truth?
Alex Melia, and the Stories of Men team are on a mission to uncover what it means to live an independent and meaningful life. We'll be sharing this knowledge with you every week.
We’d like to extend our appreciation to today’s guest, Jacob. His courage, strength and sensitivity while talking about such traumatic experiences is inspirational and deeply appreciated. His story also provides a vital part of the puzzle as we try to piece together what it means to be a man in today’s world.
