Gender Diversity in Art and Trans Rights in Germany with Louie Läuger

Gender Diversity in Art and Trans Rights in Germany with Louie Läuger

By Hannah Witton

In this episode, Hannah is joined by Louie Läuger, who is an illustrator and author based in Germany. Louie talks about how constrictive it is that German only has one word for gender and sex, and how people are creating new gender neutral terms instead of using gendered nouns, and the current state of trans rights in Germany. They and Hannah discuss how to create gender diversity in art without falling into tropes or stereotypes around the appearance of non binary and trans people, and how Louie tackled this during working Sexy Scribbles with Hannah. Louie also talks about their own experience exploring their gender identity, the inspiration behind their book Rethinking Gender, and creating conversations about gender for people with little previous understanding or experience of gender diversity. Finally, Louie shares an example of the most creative way they’ve heard someone express their gender, and gives some advice on feeling confident in your own non binary expression and appearance.
