Ethical Travel 101

Ethical Travel 101

By Brightly

In this episode, Laura and Liza explain ethical travel; they discuss everything from getting on an airplane to understanding more about carbon offsets and supporting local economies when traveling. Liza says to always have your reusable water bottle with you; however, there are some areas in the world where it is not a good idea to drink the tap water. Laura points out that there are some brands of water bottles with filters built into them, allowing for worry-free water consumption. Plus, Liza says to be careful about which souvenirs you are buying; some sellers take advantage of the artists. Then, the two explain how our travel is directly impacting climate change. We need to choose different avenues of public transportation over airplane travel and single-person car rides.  Then, Laura tells us how carbon offsets help the environment. When you buy a carbon offset, you fund projects that reduce greenhouse gas emissions. They may do things like restoring forests, planting trees, updating powerplants, and increase energy efficiency. Then, Laura and Liza give tips on things you can do to be sustainable on your trips. While on vacation, you can support businesses by eating at local restaurants rather than big chains. Being like a local is one of the most sustainable things you can do while on trips. Liza likes Airbnb because she can live just like a local and get tips for places to go from her hosts. Stay tuned to find why we shouldn’t exploit wildlife while traveling, think before you volunteer, and if cruises are a sustainable form of travel.
