Stop. Listen. Learn. #BlackLivesMatter

By Mark Asquith

I have taken the decision to suspend The Podcast Accelerator for the week 8th to 12th June 2020 so that we can all spend more time learning about the issues affecting the BAME community both local to us and around the world.

As a caucasian male, surprisingly the small-minded local community around me as a child pushed me into experiencing racism first-hand as I was called "Paki", on account of my darker skin (my paternal grandmother came from a British family with a propensity to become very dark during the sunnier months) - this small minded stupidity continued as my mother went on to marry my step-father who is of South African descent.

As a child, I vividly remember my mother becoming very upset as one of our neighbours (an elderly Scottish lady) told the community that my step father was a "n*****" and that she'd have "n*****" children.

This disgusting behaviour sadly left me with a poor understanding of how this affects people across the world every single day and as a caucasian male, my adult life has largely been sheltered from the atrocities and injustice that affect so many.

I'm doing my best to learn how I can be better and what I can do to learn how to help to stop this world from being this way, in whatever way I can.

Actions speak louder than words.

Take some.
