Chef Lokelani Alabanza: telling black history and stories through homemade ice cream.

By Nashville Podcast Network

Lokelani, “Loke” for short, is a chef who has travelled the world learning about how food ties feelings and history together while triggering emotions. Over the past 4 years, she has created over 300 ice cream flavors and has her own brand, Saturated Ice Cream. She recently posted this: “I have a deep fondness for nostalgia, it’s been the most potent ingredient that I use. Nostalgia and ice cream are a stunning combination. Food connects all of us. Don’t ever underestimate its power. Through ice cream, I started a journey into its history. Stepping into a world that I didn’t even know existed.” Loke tells me how influential her grandmother was in teaching her how to cook. She talks about how she is obsessed with finding vintage cookbooks and recreating old recipes into her ice cream. She has a flavor called “Juneteenth” that is “for our past, present and future.” It’s raspberry, hibiscus and lime. The color is red to pay homage to lives lost and blood shed. Loke talks about how we all can positively impact the Black Lives Matter movement by taking inventory of our lives and seeing where we have an outlet to be the change.
